++++RT PROGRAM NEWS++++

- Check for comments! I've now finished reading through and commenting on Assignment #1. What wonderful work! To see your feedback, sign-on to the WISE site as usual. On the first page of the Student portal, look at the top of the light brown "Projects" box. Click the light blue "View Work" tab. Click on the "2004 RT Assignments #1-6" link to take a look. Marsha is reading through and commenting on Assignment #2.

While this is "ungraded" work, you can see what a great tool WISE is for assessing student work. And all of the comments and scores (if you use them) are stored on the WISE site, which is accessible from any web browser (home or school). You can also export your students' work into an Excel spreadsheet. We'll spend more time on the WISE site during the Forum so you can learn more about the great tools available to you as a teacher.

- Since some of you have already started work on Assignment #3, I thought I'd offer some more WISE hints. In Assignment #3, you will make your first online Poster featuring your web site review.

The process of creating the poster is relatively simple because WISE automatically pulls your Web Site Review Notes (from Activity 8 "Technology: Explore!") into Activity 9 "Technology: Share Your Data." So, when you click on the "Create Your Show N' Tell" step, your "Web Site Review Notes" should appear on the right side of the page under the "Your Presentation, page 1:" heading.

** Use the scroll bar on the far right-hand side of the page to make sure that "Web Site Review Notes" is the ONLY stepwork that appears. I've noticed in a couple of the posters that there are extraneous steps ("Inquiry Discussion" or "Reflection Notes" for example). To get rid of them, click on the trash can symbol (Note: When you use the trash can button, you are NOT deleting your work. You are simply removing the section from your online poster).

** If, for some reason, your "Web Site Review Notes" are not on the right side of your screen in the "Your Presentation" column, look to the left for the scrolling column with all of your work from the three Assignments. At the top of that scrolling column, there are two light blue boxes. Ignore the first one for now and look for the "Add step work" box. Scroll down until you see the dark blue "Technology: Explore! (#3)" bar. Under that is a box with "Web Site Review Notes". Either click on the title link or on the tiny brown arrow to add this section to your presentation.

** Once you have your Web Site Review Notes where you want them, look at the top of the page for the "Show it" link. When you click this, the sentence should read "This presentation if visible to other groups."

** To see all of the posters, including your's, click on the "Poster Session!" step. Click each link to read RT reviews of selected web sites. At the bottom of each Poster is a "Respond" button. Click this to add your ideas and comments about the web site.

** After viewing a poster, click on the "Poster Session!" button on the left side of the page to return to the poster session and select another poster. The "Back" button does not work.

- If you didn't receive Brooke's "Stipend Payment" email on Tuesday, please email her immediately (bbruthers@the-aps.org). It had a big attachment and it seems that some servers didn't accept the email.

++++DEADLINES++++

- June 14th: Travel Information form & Email Survey due via fax.

- July 6th: Assignment #3 is due.

- July 12th: Research 1-Pager is due via email.

++++RESOURCES++++

- Research for Better Schools is a nonprofit education

organization that has been providing services to teachers,

administrators, and policymakers in the mid-Atlantic region since 1966. RBS offers free resources for teachers including "Riptides" a monthly mathematics and science education E-Newsletter. I just received the latest edition which highlights resources and Web sites that can help educators identify what services are available to assist students with disabilities. Check out http://www.rbs.org/mathsci/free_pubs/index.shtml to sign up. If you would like to receive the Riptides, June 2004, *Students with Disabilities*, email me directly (kkelly@the-aps.org) and I'll forward it along.

- As part of Speak Up Day 2003, 210,000 K-12 students submitted surveys on technology and education, sharing their ideas about using technology and the Internet for learning and for fun. NetDay's analysis of the data reveals interesting findings and themes. Get the highlights or the full report at http://www.netday.org/speakupday2003_report.htm .

++++OPPORTUNITIES++++

- The Mentoring Programs grant offers $29.4 million to help schools and nonprofits promote mentoring programs for children with greatest need. Eligible programs should: assist children in receiving support and guidance from a mentor; improve the academic performance of the children; improve interpersonal relationships between the children and their peers, teachers, other adults, and family members; reduce the dropout rate of the children; and reduce juvenile delinquency and involvement in gangs by the children. The department plans to make 195 awards ranging from $100,000 to $200,000. Deadline is July 7, 2004. http://www.ed.gov/legislation/FedRegister/announcements/2004-2/052804f.html

++++ALUMNI RT CORNER++++

- Rebecca Carney (Frontiers 2003) offered these comments about two things that her research host did that really helped her adjust to the research lab. Her research host:

  "1. Set-up specific times for me to meet with her to discuss the project I  was working on.

  2. Expected me to present at the final lab meeting. I think that was a positive."

As always, feel free to contact any of us in the Education Office with questions, suggestions or concerns.

Have a great week!
