Congratulations! Each year, several Research Teachers present posters
with
their Research Hosts at EB/IUPS. You will receive a schedule of RT
poster
sessions at the Orientation, so you can stop by and support your
fellow
RTs - Adrienne, Dave, Tonya, Suzy, Amy and Bill.
An
essential aspect of any research project is dissemination of the
findings
arising from the study. Common ways to make others aware of
research
findings include publishing the results in a journal article or
giving
an oral or poster presentation at meeting. At EB/IUPS, you will
have
the chance to see hundreds of posters and to speak with the
research
teams about their work. Posters are given by researchers at all
stages
of their careers - from established investigators to postdocs to
grad
students to undergrads.
The
purpose of a research poster is to present information on current
research
that often is not totally complete or to present information on
methods
of observations that are the result of ongoing research. By
presenting
information on research during its infancy, problem areas can
be
discussed with peers and methods can be adjusted to give optimum
results.
Be sure to stop by and ask your fellow RTs questions about
their
research.

Sharing Session at IUPS
During our first meeting on Saturday,
April 2, you will have a chance
to
share something that you have worked on over the past year. The
attached flyer has more details. Plan on sharing
for 2-3 minutes,
visual
aids are optional.
Think
of this as a mini-poster session - without the poster! The idea
is to
share and discuss one product/experience/challenge that came about
as a
result of your fellowship work. The idea for a Sharing Session came
from
alumni RTs who wanted to hear how their fellow RTs' field tests
went.
At the
Forum, you all heard about plans for fermenting cabbage, turning
copper
into "gold", getting kids to exercise, paper airplanes and
dehydrated
cells, but how did it work out in the classroom? What was
learned
from the field tests and what changes were made to RTs'
activities?
Your
shared experience doesn't have to be about your activity or field
test.
What else have you tried out this year? An Internet Treasure Hunt?
The
Elvis Experiments? Did your research host visit your students or
vice
versa? Did you do a WISE unit with your students? Did you revise
one of
your standard labs into one with more inquiry and/or equity
strategies?
Take this opportunity to share with and to learn from your
fellow
RTs.

We will go over the schedule and
describe the functions at that
all-important
RT Orientation session on Saturday, April 2 at 2:30 pm.
The
session is at the Marriott Hotel & Marina in the Solana Room (Level
1,
South Tower). There will be snacks and caffeine for those of you with
early
morning travels.
- You
will receive the Exit Survey at the Orientation session on
Saturday,
April 2. It's several pages, but you should have plenty of
time
while you are in San Diego to complete it. We will collect
completed
surveys at the luncheon on Monday, April 4.
- The
luncheon on Monday, April 4 is a great celebration of you and
your
research host's work during this Fellowship. You might want to drop
your
Research Host an note to see if she/he is able to make it to the
Luncheon.
If not then, try to make plans to catch up with each other
some
time during the meeting.
IMPORTANT:
If you are traveling with family members, they are welcome
to
come to the lunch with you. Please RSVP to Janet
(jjackson@the-aps.org)
by Friday (March 25) to let us know how many
guests
to expect.

Interactive Body
(http://www.collegedrinkingprevention.gov/students/anatomy/InteractiveBody_flash.aspx),
a
short online tutorial provided as part of the National Institute on
Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism's campaign against college drinking, shows
how
the stomach, heart, brain, and liver are affected by alcohol
consumption.
According to the institute, even moderate social drinking
can
result in liver damage, and heavy drinking can cause high blood
pressure,
damage the lining of the stomach, impair brain development in
adolescents,
and lead to hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver.
