++++RT PROGRAM NEWS++++

- You probably don't need reminding...but...Assignment #5 is due next

week (Feb.10th). So far, there's been very little action on the WISE

site. This is a good weekend to get it done (I mean, what else are you

going to do while you wait for the next set of Superbowl commercials?)!

There are several parts to Assignment #5, all of which are due next

week:

--- Activity 18: Revise a "Cookbook" Lab (team work)

--- Activity 19: Share Your Ideas - cookbook lab revision suggestions

(team work) & poster session (comment on other team posters

individually)

--- Activity 20: Integration of Inquiry, Equity and the Internet: Read

Up! - reading/discussion (individual - three comments)

--- Activity 21: Integration of Inquiry, Equity and the Internet:

Reflect! - reflection note (individual)

- For those that volunteered to enter your team's Notes and make the

Online Poster for Assignment #5, don't forget to click "Show it" at the

top of the Create Your Show n' Tell screen. Thanks!

++++APS REQUEST++++

- From our new Science Policy Analyst, Rebecca Osthus:

The APS is currently updating its "Questions People Ask About Animals

in Research" brochure (available on the web at

http://www.the-aps.org/pa/animals/index.htm ) and we would like to

get some input. If there are topics that you are discussing in your

classes that are not addressed in the current version, or if you have

any ideas for information that you think should be included, please let

us know by contacting Rebecca Osthus at rosthus@the-aps.org or

301-634-7254. We welcome your ideas and comments. Thank you very much.

Please drop Rebecca a line - your input is invaluable. It might be

helpful for her to hear the types of questions your students had about

your recent summer research experience.

++++DEADLINES++++

- February 10: WISE Assignment #5 due

- February 28: Submit IUPS travel plans to Brooke

(bbruthers@the-aps.org)

- March 1: Mini-Grant Reports due

(http://www.the-aps.org/education/2004rts/mini-grant.htm)

++++RESOURCES++++

-  NSTA and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, a public-private

organization focusing on skills necessary for student success in the

21st Century, have worked collaboratively to release a Science

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy Map. The map

demonstrates how educators can develop science lessons that combine 21st

century learning skills, such as information and communication skills,

with 21st century tools, such as the Internet and multimedia production

tools. To view and download a copy of the map, go to:

http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/matrices/default.asp.

- Here's a good reminder:

"Only 1 in 6 users of internet search engines can tell the difference

between unbiased search results and paid advertisements, a new survey

finds. Though it polled only adults, the survey's results underscore the

need for educators to teach their students how to understand and

evaluate carefully the information they find online..." Read the rest of

++++OPPORTUNITIES++++

- So what are you doing this summer? The American Association of

Immunologists (AAI) has Summer Research Fellowships for Middle and High

School Teachers. This program provides summer research support for

teachers to work in the laboratories of AAI members for a four-week

period coupled with 1-2 weeks of curriculum development.

- Genieve Systems L.L.C. is holding a "Ching Ching for the Bling Bling"

promotional contest to award one winner $500 cash and a standard XCLASS

60-workstation package. XCLASS is a multimedia classroom management

system that allows teachers to monitor student computers, control

student computers remotely, and more. Applicants must explain in a

paragraph or two how XCLASS would benefit their school.

Contact:  http://www.genieve.com/contest

Deadline: May 30, 2005

- Through the 2005-06 Connections program, the SMARTer Kids Foundation

will equip 8-10 sixth-grade classrooms with collaborative educational

technology. Go to http://www.smarterkids.org/k12/connections/ for more

information and the online application form. Deadline is March 1, 2005.

- New Loan Forgiveness for Science Teachers Offered by U.S. Department

of Education:

Teachers who teach math, science, or special education, and who have

taught for five years in a Title I school, may be eligible for new loan

forgiveness limits. The legislation recently signed into law by

President Bush, The Taxpayer-Teacher Protection Act (P.L. 108-409),

authorizes up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness to eligible highly

qualified math, science and special education teachers. The increased

amount of teacher loan forgiveness is available to new borrowers

(teachers with no outstanding loan balances prior to October. 1, 1998,

who borrow eligible loans prior to October. 1, 2005). For more

information on the program, and to see if you qualify for the loan

forgiveness, call the Department's Federal Student Aid Customer Service

hotline at 1-800-433-7327. More information is also available at

http://www.ed.gov/teachers/how/tools/initiative/updates/2005/0124.html

or http://www.ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/GEN0414.html.
