"We don't like it. We can't live without it. We spend billions of dollars
each year trying to get rid of it. Fat?a valuable source of energy and a bane
of modern society."
Mark your
calendar for the 2004 Holiday Lectures on Science from HHMI. This year's topic
is "The Science of Fat."
In four sessions, HHMI investigators Ronald M. Evans and Jeffrey M.
Friedman will discuss how the body regulates weight by carefully controlling the
storage and burning of fat?and how a better understanding of these complex
metabolic systems could lead researchers to treatments that curb obesity and
improve public health. These online events are free to teachers and students.

- Blog
on! A blog (from "web log") is an interactive online forum in which
to share and discuss ideas. A blogger quickly serves up information to the
internet without having to go through the process of HTML formatting. It can be
an ideal space for discussion and debate, because the user-friendly interface
encourages people to state their case without having to learn any software
commands.
According
to eSchool News, "few communications technologies are expected to have as
dramatic an effect on classroom learning as weblogging. In fact, blogs are
already taking classrooms by storm. An August 2004 article in The New York
Times reported that, as early as the second-grade, many U.S. students are using
blogs to discuss homework assignments and communicate with one another, and
that this online interaction with peers has done wonders to increase students'
interest in what they are learning."
eSchool
News just debuted the "Ed-Tech Insider" blog devoted to discussion of
technology solutions for the daily challenges educators face. It's free to
register and participate in this online community. Go to
http://www.eschoolnews.com/eti/etiintro1.cfm to learn more.
