++++RT PROGRAM NEWS++++

- Leone will be there, so will Diana and Kathleen...will you? I'm talking about the NABT meeting next week in Chicago. Please email Kathleen (kkelly@the-aps.org) if you'll be there, too. If you're looking for us in the Exhibit Hall, just follow the flashing stars to the APS booth (#419/517).

++++DEADLINES++++

- December 15: Final version of your lab/activity due

- December 28: Assignment #4 due

- December 31:  Spend Mini-Grant funds

++++RESOURCES++++

- Congress recently enacted tax legislation that includes an extension of the "above-the-line" tax deduction for teachers for the first $250 "out-of-pocket" you spend on instructional materials and classroom supplies. The legislation, first passed in 2002, had expired at the end of 2003. Many groups, including the NEA, are working to increase the deduction, to make the deduction permanent, and to expand eligible expenses to include professional development. For more information, visit the NEA website at http://www.nea.org/lac/edtax/index.html.

Remember to keep your receipts for classroom materials you purchased during the 2004 calendar year so that you can take the deduction come tax time. Note: this works for spending you did (are doing) above and beyond your Mini-Grant funds. Since you are being reimbursed fully for your Mini-Grant funding, you shouldn't take it as a deduction, too.

- NSTA Issues Position Statement on Scientific Inquiry: Recognizing the power that scientific inquiry has in helping students understand science content, NSTA has issued a position statement that sets forth key recommendations on three central aspects of inquiry: the use of scientific inquiry as a teaching approach, students' abilities to do scientific inquiry, and students' understanding of scientific inquiry. NSTA recommends that all K-16 teachers embrace scientific inquiry and is committed to helping educators make it the centerpiece of the science classroom. To download a copy of the Scientific Inquiry position statement, go to http://www.nsta.org/positionstatement&psid=43.

- Did you know that pop-up turkey timers are reusable? Check Mrs. Dziekanowski's Thanksgiving science page for links to learn how these ingenious little gadgets work and more turkey day science. http://www.scienceclassroom.com/mrsdz/Links/links_holidays/links_holidays_thanksgiving.htm

++++OPPORTUNITIES++++

- It's not too late to vote...NetDay has extended its deadline for Speak Up Day for Students to Nov. 12. Tune in for this 2nd annual online event which lets students across the country speak out about using technology and the Internet. NetDay's goal is to collect input from 500,000 students on the issues that matter to them. The survey will take 15-20 minutes. One person must register your school for participation. Then,  recruit as many students as possible to take the survey.  http://www.netday.org/speakup_forstudents.htm

Last year's Speak Up Day survey reached 210,000 K-12 students from 3,000 schools in all 50 states as well as Department of Defense Overseas Schools. It was the largest collection of student ideas on education ever! A national report of the data was shared with local, state, and national decision makers and is available on the NetDay web site (www.netday.org).

- Present at NSTA next year: Share your successes, your ideas, and your knowledge by presenting at an upcoming NSTA convention. Proposals are currently being accepted for the 2005 fall conventions, which will be held in Hartford, CT (Oct. 20-22), Chicago (Nov. 10-12), and Nashville (Dec. 1-3); and for their 2006 national convention in Anaheim, CA (April 6-9). Deadline for submission is January 15 for 2005 fall conventions; April 15, for the 2006 national convention. Go to http://science.nsta.org/enewsletter/2004-09/www.pdf. Membership in NSTA is not a prerequisite for presenters.
