12!!!!!!!!! We are looking forward to seeing how you have changed and enhanced
your write-up. When you have finished revising your activity, send a copy* to
Kathleen (preferably via an email attachment). If you have any questions about
the requested revisions or our suggestions, please get in touch with Kathleen
NOW!!! Both Marsha and Kathleen are glad to talk it over!
*To
attach your word processing file to an email:
1.
Open up a new email message and address it to kkelly@the-aps.org
2.
Click on "attach"
3.
Click on "browse" to find the word processing file of your activity
4.
Click on "save" to attach the file to your email
5.
Send the email
Alternately,
you can mail a 3.5" disk or CD-ROM with your activity file. If you choose
to mail it, plan for lag time so that it is delivered in time. On the disk
label, write your name, the type of format (e.g., Windows 95/98, Macintosh,
etc.) and the word
processing
program you used (e.g., Microsoft Word, WordPerfect 5.1, WordPerfect for
Windows 6.0, etc.).
-
Don't forget to submit your revised Internet activity, NSES and Pedagogy
worksheets with your revised Activity/Lab. Fresh copies can be downloaded from
http://www.the-aps.org/education/2003rts/ActivityDevelopment.htm.
-
Check the 2003 RT site for updated
EB information and fun DC facts. From lions to da Vinci, there are lots of neat
things to learn about DC (http://www.the-aps.org/education/2003rts/EB2004.htm).
Included is a link to a list of restaurants near the Convention Center. In the
spring, we'll start sharing our restaurant tips and picks. Don't forget to
email Brooke (bbruthers@the-aps.org)
with your hotel/travel information.

+++++RESOURCES+++++
-
Pretty pictures
Following
is a link to a Cell Biology Education journal article that reviews several Web
sites of educational interest to the life science community. Includes sections
on the history of mitosis, teaching mitosis today and viewing mitosis.
http://www.cellbioed.org/articles/vol2no4/article.cfm?articleID=76.
You can also order a gorgeous mitosis poster (free) in the American Society of
Cell Biologists online store
https://www.ascb.org/ascbsec/shoppingcart/product.cfm?PID=20. Just in
time for the holidays...the ASCB has very funny (in a cellular kinda way)
t-shirts for sale. Our favorite for the couch potato set has the tag line
"Actually on a cellular level, I'm really quite busy."
-
"With Flu Season Coming, Don't Forget?Exercise?" is just one of the
many press releases on current research findings in the APS Press Room. Written
for the lay audience, these engaging press releases clearly explain current
physiology research and possible impacts on our health. Each release describes
the topic or health issue, a new study that explores the issue and the study's
methodology, results and conclusions. These write-ups can be great resources
for the classroom...perhaps in those hard-to-teach hours just before school
lets out for the holidays! See
http://www.the-aps.org/press/journal/22.htm for the flu release and
http://www.the-aps.org/press/journal/ for all of the 2002 & 2003 releases
which include topics like "Couch Potatoes May Be Created In The Womb, Not
At The Dinner Table," "For Those Who Smoke Young," and
"Drink at Least Eight Glasses of Water a Day For Better Health?"
- Last
call for freebies (email kkelly@the-aps.org). They aren't exactly stocking
stuffers, but could be useful around the classroom! On a first-come, first-serve
basis, Kathleen will happily send any of the following to you:
-
Sterile 1uL Loop/Needle Bioloops. Bundled in packs of 20, so please specify how
many packs you want.
- One
big bag of red coffee stirrers (18 cm length). Not for food use anymore, but
good for projects!
-
Heavy duty "Canners and Handlers" plastic gloves
-
Plastic magnifying glasses, good for party bags or classroom prize grab-bag.
Bags of 25, some slightly scratched.
