PROGRAM NEWS++++
- The
WISE Assignment #4 Discussion is rolling along. Be sure to check into the
Assignment to see what's going on: http://wise/berkeley.edu . To view
Assignment #4, you have to log on to with your STUDENT id. Email Kathleen if
you've misplaced that very bright yellow sheet with your Username/Password.
- I've
been getting some questions about Mini-Grants. Now that you've had a chance to
do a little shopping around, you may have changed your mind about something you
originally listed on your grant application or something costs more/less than
you thought it would. Simply send Kathleen an email with the requested changes
or additions to your request for approval.
- With
or without changes, make sure to keep your receipts and track your spending. We
want you to spend up all the grant money! Also, you don't have to wait until
March to submit your Expenditure Report
(http://www.the-aps.org/education/2004rts/mini-grant.htm ).
-
Kathleen is off to the SACNAS meeting in Austin, TX at the end of this week
(Thurs-Sat) and so will be a little slow in replying to emails/calls. Feel free
to call or email Brooke (bbruthers@the-aps.org) in the meantime.
- The
application for the 2005 Explorations in Biomedicine fellowship is up on the
APS website (http://www.the-aps.org/education/expl/research.htm) and available
in print form. We'll send copies out to alumni Explorations RTs in the coming
weeks.
The
Explorations in Biomedicine program provides professional development
opportunities for middle and high school science teachers and tribal college
faculty who teach Native American students on or near Indian Reservations.

Teacher-to-Teacher online video courses: The U.S. Department of Education (ED)
has a new professional development web site for teachers and administrators.
Built by teachers for teachers, the new site is the culmination of more than 12
workshops and hours of educator-led discussions and roundtable sessions about
how best to improve teacher training in accordance with the federal No Child
Left Behind Act (NCLB). http://www.paec.org/teacher2teacher/
- A
"Goggle" for Science: A newly enhanced, scientific-only search engine
gives students, scholars, and other academics another tool to conduct
effective, comprehensive internet searches to find bona fide scientific
information. The search engine, called Scirus is free to users.
http://www.scirus.com
Scirus
currently searches more than 167 million pages and documents from the internet,
as well as proprietary journal content. Web content is limited to content from
universities, research institutes, governments, scientific organizations and
conferences, scientists' home pages, and company pages. The engine also
searches the contents of MedLine, ScienceDirect, the U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office, BioMed Central, NASA, and others.

Currently, APS has two projects in the WISE Project Library - "The Organic
Foods Controversy" and "The Sense of Touch". We have two other
units that are almost ready for primetime - "It's a Matter of Taste"
and "Color Your World." Because we are making a few final edits on
these two units, you can't access them through the Project Library, just yet.
However, if you would like to preview and/or use them, just let us know.
Kathleen can give you access to view and run them (kkelly@the-aps.org).
