PROGRAM NEWS++++
-
Thanks to those who have turned in your "Summer of Science" 1-pagers
already. Today is the deadline, so, for those who haven't done so already,
please email your paper (as an attachment) to kkelly@the-aps.org.
- As
I've been reviewing your lab/activities, I've noticed a couple of things:
1) As
a group, the 2004 RTs did a great job of turning in drafts that meet the Big
Seven requirements! Thank you for that.
2)
Some of your activities could use an Experimental Design worksheet for the
students. You know that inquiry is not a free-for-all even though your students
are designing their own experiments. You probably have your students do this
already, but consider whether it might be helpful for a colleague who is not as
used to doing inquiry experiments with students. See the Activity Development
page of the 2004 RT website for two sample worksheets that you could adapt and
include in your final lab/activity:

Sorry about the cartoon URL typo last week - here's the corrected version:

So, did
anyone check them out? Are they useful?
- From
the NSTA Legislative Update:
Congress
is one step closer to finishing work on the FY2005 appropriations for federal
education programs, including the Math and Science Partnerships at the National
Science Foundation and the U. S. Department of Education. Read how much these
programs might receive next year in this issue of the NSTA Legislative Update
(http://science.nsta.org/nstaexpress/nstaexpress_2004_09_27_legupdate.htm).
++++OPPORTUNITIES++++
- The
2005 Team America Rocketry Challenge dares students to design, build, and fly
model rockets that carry one or two raw eggs for precisely 60 seconds,
returning the eggs to the ground unbroken. Teams made up of three to 15
students currently enrolled in grades 7 through 12 in a U.S. school are
eligible to enter. The first 1,250 teams that submit an application package
postmarked on or before the November 30 deadline will be allowed to compete in
this year's event. The top 10 teams will split $60,000 cash and savings bonds.
