++++RT PROGRAM NEWS++++

- Congratulations and thank you! As today comes to a close, pat yourself on the back for getting your lab/activity draft in. You all really took your ideas and outlines from the Forum and ran with them!

What's next? Your field test/peer review, of course. While you are doing that, Marsha and I will review your drafts and,  in the next two months, send you feedback. You can use all of that input to make your final revisions.

- Assignment #4 is active on WISE (http://wise.berkeley.edu) and your packets are in the mail. Word of advice...take a cruise through the assignment NOW so you know what needs to get done. Assignment #4 will help you gather feedback on your draft Lab/Activity either through field tests or peer reviews.

- Your "Summer of Science"

Attached is a guidelines sheet (.pdf version) for putting together a brief and engaging 1-page description of your summer in the lab. The audience for this one-pager includes your students, parents, colleagues and the school newspaper. You can take the "Research 1-Pager" that you wrote earlier this summer and revise it. The guidelines are also on the 2004 RT website (http://www.the-aps.org/education/2004rts/expect.htm) in the "Month by Month" section.

- Spring meeting reminder: Mark your calendars for April 2-5, 2005 for the IUPS meeting in San Diego. For those of you trying to plan your days out of class, following are some general guidelines:

+ Our first session will be on Saturday afternoon (April 2nd). So, depending on available flights, some will be able to fly in on Saturday morning and make the session, while others will travel Friday night.

+ Our last session wraps up at 2:30 pm on Monday afternoon (April 4th). If you need to, you could catch an evening flight and be home for class the next day (depending on where you live and how well you handle jet lag!).

+ Many details will follow in October when Brooke sends out the travel packet. You DO NOT have to do/book/reserve anything right now.

- Kudos to Terri DeCresie for already submitting her Mini-Grant Expenditure Report and receipts!  We know that the beginning of the school year is very hectic, but we do appreciate receiving reports before deadlines!

- Payment Reminder: Speaking of Mini-Grants, please keep in mind that from the date we receive a payment or Mini-Grant request, you can expect to receive a check in about three weeks.  We do everything that we can to process payments right away.  However, the three-week time frame accounts for approval time, the Business Office's scheduled check runs and time in the mail.  Thank you.

++++DEADLINES++++

- October 1: "Summer of Science" 1-pager due

- November 3 (optional): IUPS Abstracts due (talk to your Research Host)

- December 12: Final version of your lab/activity due

- December 28: Assignment #4 due

++++RESOURCES++++

- A tech resource from Marsha:

A number of you were interested in the program I mentioned that helps prevent students from going to websites that are off-task (music downloads, etc.). If students open a new window, they can't close out that window without your security password. This helps you know when they've been off-site and off-task. The program is called Winlock and has a number of other great features as well. The website is http://www.crystaloffice.com/wlinfo.html

Note that you can try it free for 30 days, a single copy is $17 and multiple site licenses are available. Check it out!

My nephew (the computer network guru) also recommended Deep Freeze, a program that stops students from using or installing unauthorized software. Check it out at http://www.faronics.com/html/edsolutions.asp . Again, you can try this for free. Be sure to pass these along to your IT director.
