WOW - now that we've spent a week together, the weekly email and this listserv takes on a whole new meaning! Thanks for your part in making the 2004 Science Teaching Forum a productive and fun experience.

++++RT PROGRAM NEWS++++

- A note from Marsha: Several of you asked for the contact info for Wiley & Sons Publishing to say "thanks" for the Anatomy/Phys textbooks and dvds/cd's. The person to thank is Clay Stone (cstone@wiley.com). I encourage you to drop him a note to let him know that you're in the APS Frontiers in Physiology/Explorations in Biomedicine program and that you appreciated the gift.

- Speaking of thank yous, if you'd like to drop a line to Caryl Buck, our Nature Walk leader from the Environmental Studies Center, you can email her at cbuck@airlie.com.

- See the 2004 RT web site for APS Mini-Grant information and the "crash course" we briefly reviewed at the Forum. Scroll to the bottom of the Mini-Grant page (http://www.the-aps.org/education/2004rts/mini-grant.htm) for the "Grants and Donations Crash Course" button.

When asking yourself whether or not to apply for a grant, consider the following:

+ Your idea must be a good "fit" with the funder's priorities for grantmaking.

+ Rather than trying to make your program fit the funder, find a funder to fit your program. A good way to determine "the fit" is to look at past recipients of grants from that particular funder.

+ Carefully read the grant guidelines...if the funder states that it only fund programs in Louisiana, it means it. Don't waste your time trying to convince them otherwise!

+ Plan ahead! If you get the grant, it can take 6 to 18 months to receive the grant money.

- For those who are field-testing your lab/lesson in the coming weeks, the Field Test Notes and Peer Review forms are on the 2004 RT web site http://www.the-aps.org/education/2004rts/assign.htm. More details are forthcoming in the Assignment #4 packet which will hit your mailboxes in early September. In the meantime, please contact Kathleen (kkelly@the-aps.org) with questions about your lab/lesson.

- Now that we know each other better, we hope you will use the 2004 RT listserv to share resources and ideas and to ask questions of your fellow RTs. Please take a minute to review the information about how this list serv works at the 2004 RT web site (http://www.the-aps.org/education/2004rts/listserv.htm). Also listed on this page are your fellow RTs' email addresses.

- Please take a second to email Kathleen (kkelly@the-aps.org) to update your email address(es) for the listserv. You can receive list serv messages at home or school or both.

++++DEADLINES++++

++++OPPORTUNITIES++++

- The Braitmayer Foundation supports programs that enhance the education of K-12 students through curricular and school reform initiatives, professional development for teachers, and local community efforts. Its grants, which range in size up to $35,000, are to be used as seed money, challenge grants, or to match other grants to the recipient organization. http://www.braitmayerfoundation.org/guid.htm

Here's a good example of reading the funding guidelines carefully. The following quote comes from the Braitmayer's web site: "Unless a small percentage of the total amount requested, normally the Foundation does not make grants for childcare, pre-kindergarten, or after school programs nor for equipment including hardware, software, and books." So, it's not a likely source for technology funds!

- Food Safety FIRST is an online training program for secondary science teachers that will help teachers implement active food safety education lessons in their classrooms. There are three modules: Bacteria Are Everywhere* - ( Begins September 13, 2004 ); Food Handling Is a Risky Business* - (Begins October 18, 2004 ); Current Controversies in Food Science - (Begins January, 2005). The cost is $65/module. See http://www.foodsafetyfirst.org/fsf_about.html for information and to register.

- Let your students do the grant-writing! 3D Life Adventures is a non profit educational organization connecting young people to nature and their communities. 3D Action Grant program provides financial and consulting support for student-led initiatives related to natural or cultural diversity. Students can receive up to $500 to help design and implement a project.  http://3dzone.org/html/programs/grants.asp

++++RESOURCES++++

- The Cassini mission to Saturn will result in a wealth of new knowledge. Educators looking to integrate Cassini's travels into their lesson plans will find a number of useful resources and teaching materials on NASA's web site. NASA has prepared a formal program that aims to incorporate mathematics, science, and technology into a series of lessons built around the Cassini mission. http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/education/index.cfm

- The WhizKids Foundation web site has a nice section on science fair project development and resources. Check it out at http://www.whizkidsfoundation.org/resources.html.

++++APS OFFICE NEWS++++

- Kathleen will be out of the office Thursday, August 5 - Monday, August 9. Please call or email Brooke with fellowship questions or concerns during that time.
