++++RT PROGRAM NEWS++++

- We're pleased to announce the second Physiologist-in-Residence for the 2004 Forum. Dr. Karma Rabon-Stith will be taking a break from her research at the University of Maryland to join us for the week at Airlie. She is a Postdoctoral Fellow working in the areas of Exercise Physiology, Genetics, Metabolism & Aging.

- Thanks for your great work on Assignment #3. If you haven't looked in on the Discussion or Poster Session for a while, check it out! Feel free to add comments. We definitely have lots share with each other about technology in the classroom.

- At the Forum, you will have 3 minutes (max.) to tell everyone about your research experience. You can use ONE overhead transparency if you want (no PowerPoint presentations, please).

Everyone will have a copy of your 1-pager for reference (for the long words!), so you do not have to cover every detail in your presentation. Focus on giving an overview of the research project, why it matters, who you work with in the lab, and your personal experiences.

Other things you may want to talk about (though you won't have time for all of them!): the techniques/procedures, the realities of research (is your experiment working? are the results what you/your research host expected? how many times did you/your team have to start over? has the research question changed because of unexpected results?) and/or what you want to share with your students/friends/colleagues about working in a research lab/being a scientist.

++++DEADLINES++++

- Monday, July 12th: Research 1-Pager is due via email (kkelly@the-aps.org).. Please adhere to this deadline, as we are formatting and printing up a booklet of the 1-pagers next week.

- July 26 (at the Forum): Beads Poster

++++OPPORTUNITIES++++

- Applications for the 2005-06 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program are available on line at: www.scied.science.doe.gov. The program funds highly accomplished K-12 math and science teachers to come to Washington DC for academic year fellowships. Stipend, a travel allowance and a relocation allowance provided. For more info: please visit www.triangle-coalition.org. Deadline February 1, 2005.

++++RESOURCES++++

 - Making Schools Work for Every Child: This CD-ROM, for educators concerned about equity in K-12 mathematics and science, provides articles and resources for developing techniques and understanding the special needs of students. To request this or other free mathematics, science, and educational resources, visit the "Free Publications" page of the RBS Web site. http://www.rbs.org/mathsci/free_pubs/index.shtml

++++FORUM REMINDERS++++

- RE. developing your own lab/lesson: We highly recommend adapting a lab you currently use. You can take a lab/activity that you think could be better, and transform it to incorporate inquiry, equity and the Internet.

- If you are thinking about adapting a lab, BRING printouts with you to the Forum. Remember, field-testing takes place Sept.-Oct., so consider adapting a lab you do early in the school year.

- Leave room in your suitcase for all the resources you will be bringing back. Think about packing an extra travel bag!

- You do NOT have to bring your RT Assignments notebook (the one with bright green cover).

--Make your Bead Poster travel-friendly! Maximum size is 2' x 3'. Bring it with you to Registration on Monday at 1:00 pm.

++++APS STAFF INTRO++++

- You've heard from your six Mentors, but we thought you might want to know a bit more about the folks who send out all the emails, issue the deadlines and concoct the Assignments, i.e. the APS Education staff! Marsha sent her welcome out a few weeks ago. Look for upcoming installments from Kathleen and Scarletta. Here's the word from Brooke:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello everyone!
Prior to life at the APS, I was an elementary education major at West Virginia University.  (I eventually decided not to teach.)  Not long after college, I went to work for a moving company, working my way to the international department where I coordinated household and commercial (office) moves, both imports and exports.  It was a wonderful experience working with people from all over the world and learning how other countries do business.  I was also fortunate enough to travel the world to attend conferences and work on different projects with large international organizations.  After a couple years, I decided I needed a change and came to work for Marsha.
So now in addition to being the "travel and stipend guru" for the Explorations and Frontiers programs, I also coordinate the exhibits at conferences that the Education Office Staff attend, as well as the APS/NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases) Minority Travel Fellowship.  The APS encourages minority students and faculty to apply for travel awards to attend the fall APS meetings, Experimental Biology (EB) and the 35th Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS), which you all will attend in April 2005.  At the Forum, I'll tell you a little more about that program and about the opportunity to have a minority physiologist visit your classroom.
On a personal note, I grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and enjoy exercising, travel and spending time with family and friends.  I've been married for almost 5 years to my husband, Chris (who I met on a blind date when we were at WVU!).
So, that's a little bit about me.  But I'm really looking forward to meeting you all at Airlie!  And as I've said before, if you have ANY questions or concerns about travel logistics for the Forum or about your stipend payments, please don't hesitate to give me a call or send me an email (bbruthers@the-aps.org).  Please also be sure to check your email the week of 7/19 for a pre-Forum travel information message from me.
Kind regards,
Brooke
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Best,
Kathleen
