Family Medicine/Rural Clerkship


Academic Days / Procedure Day
In addition to clinical care of patients and participation in community activities, students also participate in didactic activities for addressing clinical knowledge.


Academic Days: Mandatory - Charleston
    (NOTE:  Below is a
typical schedule.  Students should refer to the pink calendar for their specific rotations for exact activity dates)


MUSC Family Medicine Building on Calhoun Street / other classroom space on MUSC campus – conducted by MUSC Family Medicine faculty members.  Rotation-specific details are included in the student’s orientation packet.

Week 1 Days 1 & 2 of rotation - morning and afternoon (Orientation / Academic Day workshops)

Day 3 of rotation – morning OSLE   afternoon travel to rural practice sites\
Week 6             
Wednesday morning in clinic, afternoon return to Charleston

Thursday morning - Study time.  Afternoon - Final Exam/exit survey

Friday morning - OSCE.  Afternoon - Wrap Up (student presentations)

AHEC Family Medicine Residency
Procedure Day

(Optional -
NOT required)


One day per rotation at either Anderson, Greenwood, Florence or Spartanburg Family Medicine Residency.

(Although not required, students consistently rate Procedure Day as an excellent experience and well worth the trip.  Students often carpool to Procedure Day to save on travel expenses.)

  • Students start the day at approximately 11:00 / 11:30 AM - allows students rotating around the state to travel to Residency, enjoy a luncheon with faculty and residents, tour the facility, and participate in workshops.
  • Hands-on workshops may include:
  • Casting
  • Stress Test
  • Central Line Placement
  • Colposcopy
  • Nasopharyngoscopy
  • Skin Biopsy
  • Joint Injections
