Radiation Safety Office Radioactive
Waste Requirements
Radioactive waste must always be stored in properly labeled containers.
All radioactive waste that poses an external exposure hazard must shielded
with the appropriate shield. All radioactive waste must be secured from
loss or theft at all times. All radioactive waste must satisfy the following
requirement before it will be picked up by the Radiation Safety Office.
All radioactive waste pickups are scheduled by completing the online
waste pickup notification form. The notification form is accessed by
clicking the "Waste Pickup"
link in the menu to the left.
Solid Waste Requirements
Solid radioactive waste must be properly packaged in a double lined,
non-biohazard plastic bag and sealed with tape. Radioactive waste contained
in biohazard, red, or orange bags will not be accepted for disposal.
Waste bags containing liquid radioactive waste or lead containers will
not be accepted. All sharps (glass pipettes, syringes, razor blades,
etc...) must be contained in a rigid plastic container before being
placed in waste bags. Waste bags containing loose sharps will not be
accepted. All waste bags must be labeled with a properly completed waste
tag. Waste tags must include the investigator's name, the laboratory
room number, radionuclide, activity, disposal date and must be signed
by an authorized representative of the laboratory.
Liquid Waste Requirements
All scintillation vials must be in a flat container or box, arranged
to prevent spillage, and bagged to provide secondary containment. Bags
containing loose vials will not be accepted. Scintillation vials containing
H-3 and C-14 in concentrations less than 1.85 kBq/gm (0.05 uCi/gm) must
be segregated from all other liquid waste. Scintillation vials containing
non-biodegradable scintillation fluid will be picked up by the Radiation
Safety Office only on scheduled dates. For more information regarding
biodegradable scintillation fluid click the LSC
Fluids link in the menu to the left.
Bulk quantities (i.e. liter and gallon containers) of liquid radioactive
waste will be picked upon a case by case basis. Please contact the Radiation
Safety Office for more information regarding bulk radioactive liquid
waste.
All liquid radioactive waste must be labeled with a properly completed
waste tag.. Liquid radioactive waste tags must include the investigator's
name, the laboratory room number, radionuclide, activity, hazardous
chemical constituents, disposal date and must be signed by an authorized
representative of the laboratory.
Radioactive waste tags and empty scintillation vial boxes may obtain
by contacting the Radiation Safety Office.
