Senate Orientation - Welcome!

Vision Statement As the representative body of the Medical University of South Carolina faculty, the Faculty Senate is the faculty voice whose recommendations reflect and advocate the faculty's collective interests to further the university's mission. 
Meetings

Senate meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month

When unable to attend a meeting:
(1) Make sure an alternate from your college can attend.
(2) Notify either the Administrative Assistant or the Secretary to the Senate of your absence.

Length of Term

Senate terms are two years in length with a maximum of three consecutive terms. If your term begins October 2007, your term will expire September 2009.

  • Review the Faculty Handbook
  • Serve on Senate Committees or University Committees, as requested

Executive Committee The Executive Committee is composed of the Senate Officers and one representative from each of the 6 colleges and the Library/General Faculty. The Executive Committee reviews issues and sets the agenda for the Senate meetings.
Senate Committees
  • Governance Committee - Governs proceedings of Senate; conducts Senate elections, interprets provisions and determines changes or amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws

  • Committee on Institutional Advancement - Monitors trends in the life of the institution, tracks progress of action items discussed in the Senate, participates in strategic planning for the University; requests Senate take a position or act on issues of general interest

  • Committee on Communication and Education - Collaborates with other standing committees to inform faculty of issues; informs the faculty about the work of the Senate through organized activities, maintains the Faculty Senate Web site and insures Senate activities published in The Catalyst and other University publications

  • Committee on Faculty and Institutional Relationships - Considers issues pertaining to negotiations and procedures that apply to individual faculty (e.g., contracts, tenure/post-tenure review, promotions and rank, equity, sabbaticals, conflicts of interest, means of grievance)

  • Planning Committee for New Faculty Welcome (Ad hoc Committee) - This committee plans the New Faculty Welcome, held twice each year.

You will be responsible for joining one of these committees. Additional information will be provided at the October meeting regarding the purpose of each.
