APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Minutes of the August 8 and September 12, 2006, meetings were approved and are posted on the Senate's Web site.

MEETING PROCEEDINGS

I. GUEST SPEAKER
Dr. John Schafer, III – Endowed Chair for Medical Simulation

Dr. John Schafer III, Endowed Chair for Medical Simulation and Assistant Dean of Statewide Clinical Effectiveness Education, provided an update on the Center for Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety. The Center is a part of Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC), a hospital-university collaboration composed of numerous member institutions across the state. Dr. Schaefer explained that the Center is designed to support advanced instructional technology in healthcare and that simulation facilities are under construction here at MUSC as well as other member institutions. The use of simulation provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals and students to practice high-risk procedures with minimum risk and cost. In addition, the facilities will support the collection of data from simulation experiences providing an opportunity for South Carolina to be at the forefront of healthcare simulation research.

II. NEW BUSINESS

Annual Report of Senate

The 2006-2007 Senate term begins with the October session. Dr. Rick Albenesius, President of Senate, welcomed new senators, thanked the Executive Committee for their work over the past year, and provided the Senate’s Annual Report. The annual report can be viewed on the Senate’s Web site at http://www.musc.edu/facsen.

Election of Officers for 2006-2007

Senators elected the following officers for the 2006-2007 term:

Dr. Rick Albenesius, President
Dr. Walter Limehouse, Vice President
Dr. Mary Mauldin, Secretary

Dr. Albenesius encouraged Senators to sign-up for one of the Senate committees. Each committee will select a representative to serve on the Executive Committee.

E*Value

Andrea Wessell, Senate representative on the E*Value Committee, reported that the use of E*Value for course evaluation will be implemented in January 2007. Core questions will be developed by the PACE office, and course specific questions will be developed by each college. Dr. Wessell stated that policies will be forthcoming and will be presented to the Senate prior to final approval.
