MEETING PROCEEDINGS
I. GUEST SPEAKER
Dr. John Schafer, III – Endowed
Chair for Medical Simulation
Dr. John Schafer III, Endowed Chair for Medical Simulation and Assistant
Dean of Statewide Clinical Effectiveness Education, provided an update
on the Center for Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety. The Center
is a part of Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC), a hospital-university
collaboration composed of numerous member institutions across the state.
Dr. Schaefer explained that the Center is designed to support advanced
instructional technology in healthcare and that simulation facilities
are under construction here at MUSC as well as other member institutions.
The use of simulation provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals
and students to practice high-risk procedures with minimum risk and
cost. In addition, the facilities will support the collection of data
from simulation experiences providing an opportunity for South Carolina
to be at the forefront of healthcare simulation research.
