Every teaching institution has some form of shadowing for medical students, and MUSC is no different. This is a tremendous chance for students to get into the ED for invaluable early exposure. Exposure to the emergency department is limited and there are few opportunities to work in the emergency room outside of clinical rotations (only in the 4th year critical care core month). It is tough for you to really know if you're interested in a specific area of medicine if you've never been exposed to it, so this is a perfect opportunity for 1st and 2nd year medical students. The EM faculty at MUSC are very open and receptive to having medical students come in for some period of time to work on their interviewing skills, physical assessment and diagnosing and treating (e.g. suturing) of medical problems. Of course the shadowing experience is completely based on the level of training of the student, but the more you come then the more you will learn. You can either contact Dr Bush directly, or stop by 1 West (trauma center) and ask the unit secretary who is working a specific day and then contact that physician directly about shadowing. |
