Family Medicine Residency Program

Year Three Curriculum

Cardiology
The required rotation in cardiology involves working with a group of private practice cardiologists on the campus of Trident Medical Center. The resident learns the outpatient evaluation and management of patients with cardiovascular disease as well as performing numerous procedures and assisting with inpatient consults completed by these cardiologists.

Community Medicine
During this rotation, the third year resident works with a private Family Medicine physician in a large community practice.

Electives (Two 2.5 week blocks plus 1 full block)
A list of available elective rotations is provided. Professional advisors and the program director are available to discuss elective options. See list of electives.

Chief Resident's Office

Environmental & Occupational Medicine (EOM)
This rotation in environmental and occupational medicine provides a balance of scholarly review of available literature and direct patient care. This experience is a pioneer effort to improve our residents EOM skills before they encounter patients with these problems in the workplace, as well as providing opportunities in environmental medicine.

Family Medicine/General Internal Medicine Inpatient
One month is spent on the family medicine inpatient service at Trident Medical Center. During this rotation, the resident supervises interns, coordinates patient care and organizes educational activities for the family medicine inpatient team.

General Surgery
One month is spent rotating with a group of local general surgeons located on the campus of Summerville Medical Center, an affiliate of Trident Health System. The resident is able to examine patients in the emergency room and act as first assistant in the operating room. In addition, care of surgical patients is taught in the office setting.

Geriatrics
Under the supervision of program faculty members, the resident rotates for one month assisting with the care of residents at a local nursing home. Also, during the second and third year, residents provide longitudinal care to continuity patients from this facility one half day per month.

Night Float
Two 2.5 week blocks are spent on night float covering the family medicine inpatient services (one block at MUH, one at Trident Medical Center).

Practice Management/Group Senior
The one month practice management rotation provides the resident the opportunity to review areas pertaining to the success of the practice as well as understanding the many financial issues associated with family medicine.

Year Three
Third Year Residents will spend up to five (5) 1/2 days per week in the Family Medicine Center participating in patient care.
