Trident Family Medicine Residency Program
Charleston, SC

From the Residency Director

On behalf of Trident Health System and the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), I would like to extend our appreciation for your interest in the Trident Family Medicine Residency Program. Our residency is a unique educational partnership between an outstanding community hospital and a modern academic medical center. The Department of Family Medicine at MUSC was established in 1970 as one of the first university-based departments in the country.

The residency program has graduated over 370 family physicians and we currently recruit for 30 positions. Our graduates have excelled in both private and academic practice. In addition to the residency program, our department and faculty have become nationally known in many areas of family medicine education including: quality improvement in medicine, primary care research, computerized patient records, a health maintenance reminder system, community-oriented primary care, evidence-based medicine, sports medicine, ambulatory pharmacology, the doctor-patient relationship, environmental and occupational medicine.

Trident Medical Center, a nationally recognized community hospital, serves as the primary site for resident education. Additionally, Trident Medical Center serves as the sponsoring institution for the program. This location and partnership with MUSC provides us with many of the unique educational opportunities associated with a community medical center while maintaining the benefits of a university affiliation.

In considering quality and excellence in family practice education, we consider the Trident Family Medicine Residency Program to be one of the best family medicine residency programs in the country. While subjectively many other programs may be able to state a similar claim, we feel we have the record in patient care, education, and scholarly activity to provide objectivity to our assessment:

  • In-training exam scores above national average and a 99% pass rate on the American Board of Family Practice examination.
  • Faculty who serve as members and leaders of state and national committees regarding family practice and resident education.
  • Faculty with over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Faculty who can serve as exemplary role models in patient care (numerous faculty have received the "Best Doctors in America" designation).
  • Residents consistently grade the faculty and their educational skills as very good to excellent.

With our record in patient care, education, and scholarly activity, we are confident that you will feel our program provides an excellent opportunity to further your education in family practice.

Historic Charleston and its outlying communities provide an excellent and enjoyable environment in which to work and live. In addition to the downtown area with its historical sites and variety of restaurants and scenic parks, Charleston is well known for its moderate climate, spacious beaches, golf and tennis, plantations, and barrier islands.

Residents are able to find affordable housing in numerous communities: Downtown, James Island, East Cooper, West Ashley and the North Area.

Again, I appreciate your interest in our residency program. Some of our residents have taken the time to share their thoughts about the program. I hope you will take the time to read them. I look forward to hearing from you and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Respectfully,

Peter J. Carek, M.D., M.S.
