Education About Prescription Drug Discount Card Programs.
Ann Rodden, DO. Trident Family Medicine Residency Program.

Introduction: Many Medicare recipients are not aware that they may qualify for medication discounts through programs including Together Rx Card, Orange Card, Share Card, Lilly Answer, and Silver Rx Card. The purpose of this study is to determine the eligibility of Medicare patients and to educate those who are eligible.

Methods: Medicare participants at the University of Family Medicine clinic were given packets which included the criteria for eligibility and information about each program card. Each patient returned information about eligibility, previous knowledge, participation, and interest in the card programs to the front desk staff. A website was also developed to assist physicians with patients’ questions.

Results: To date, 33 patients returned the information sheet. Many patients were eligible (26 {79%}) for medication discounts. Of those eligible, 21 (81%) were interested in the programs, 6 (23%) were already participants, and only 2 (20%) had previous knowledge.

Conclusion: The majority of the eligible Medicare population is not aware of these programs and may benefit from receiving information during office visits.
