Title: Parental Opinion of Resident Care of newborns

Author: Mark Mahoney, MD; Greg Player, MD

Introduction: Focus groups consisting of new parents will be formed to determine if residents are providing adequate care to newborns, alleviating parental concern and providing anticipatory guidance.

Methods: Focus groups consisting of three to ten parents will be formed to discuss resident doctor’s care of newborns at the University Family Medicine Clinic. Each session will be tape recorded with transcripts taken. Transcripts will be analyzed to determine information that needs to be added to our clinic’s anticipatory guidance sheets.

Results: After one focus group, overall patient opinion of the care provided at UFM is very high. None of the parents received anticipatory guidance handouts at their newborn visit. Parents in this group asked for more anticipatory guidance on timing of new food introduction to infants, breast feeding, and immunizations.

Conclusion: Overall, Parents are happy with newborn care. At this point, Anticipatory guidance sheets are not being distributed in a uniform basis at UFM. Residents will be instructed to distribute this material on a regular basis.
