MUSC CARES
is a medical student initiated and managed non-profit organization
dedicated to providing free medical care to the underserved population
in the local Charleston area. The mission is to provide
Community Aid,
Relief, Education,
and Support.
Our vision to develop a student-run free medical clinic is becoming
a reality through the partnership and support of MUSC and East
Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO). An article in The
Catalyst gives a more detailed description of this project.
MUSC CARES plans to open its doors to the public in July, 2005
at ECCO's Six Mile Road facility in Mount Pleasant. Poster
(pdf file) created for the clinic. We are currently
searching for volunteers from all medical disciplines as well
as anyone else interested in caring for the community. Contact
Thuy Vu to learn more about
volunteer opportunities. To learn more about the department's
involvement contact Dr.
Wanda Gonsalves. MUSC CARES is a nonprofit charity.

Medical Students New Elective Course
The department has established a new second year elective started
this Spring Semester (2005): Caring for
the Community. Students experience first hand
a Faith Based Clinic that has been established for over 20 years.
They have didactic sessions woven into the course so they experience
both clinic and classroom in one service learning course about
the underinsured population and their health care issues.
Dr. Robert Mallin is active
with several volunteer organizations in the Charleston area.
He works with students and patients through the Crisis
Ministries Free Clinic to deliver health care to the homeless
residents of this shelter, and through the Saint
Andrews Free Medical Clinic to deliver health care to the
underpriviliged. He is on the board of advisors for the
Charleston
Center Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center. He mentors
seniors with their senior projects at the Academic
Magnet High School. He is also a volunteer SCUBA diver
at the South
Carolina Aquarium.
Dr. Peter Carek is the
medical director for the Crisis
Ministries Homeless Shelter. He is also the medical
director for the annual Cooper River Bridge Run/Walk. He
serves as team physician for the College
of Charleston Athletic Department.
