Trident Medical Center - MUSC Transitional Year Residency Program Charleston, SC

On behalf of the Trident Health System and the Departments of Family Medicine and Radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina, I would like to thank you for your interest in our transitional year program. Our program is designed to provide residents with the transitional year experience needed to prepare them for their next level of training.

Our transitional year program is unique in that in combines many qualities not found at other transitional year programs. Our community-based, University affiliated program allows for residents to train at a community hospital while continuing to be educated by university based faculty and with the resources of a major academic medical center behind them. The combination of family medicine and radiology allows our residents to experience both primary care and a specialty discipline during their year of training.
Both our family medicine and radiology residency programs are well established. The family medicine residency program has graduated over 370 family physicians and currently recruits for 30 positions. The family medicine department and faculty have become nationally known in many areas of family medicine education including: quality improvement in medicine, primary care research, computerized patient records, a health maintenance reminder system, community-oriented primary care, evidence-based medicine, sports medicine, ambulatory pharmacology, the doctor-patient relationship, and environmental and occupational medicine. The MUSC radiology residency program recruits for seven residents per year. They provide coverage for all hospitals in the MUSC system which includes the main hospital, VA hospital, Children’s hospital, and the outpatient Rutledge Tower. The department is all digital PACS and has been for nearly 10 years. Volume is approximately 200,000 exams per year and increasing.
Trident Medical Center, a nationally recognized community hospital, serves as the primary site for resident education. Additionally, Trident Medical Center serves as the sponsoring institution for the program. This location and partnership with MUSC provides us with many of the unique educational opportunities associated with a community medical center while maintaining the benefits of a university affiliation.
Combining it all: Trident Medical Center, MUSC, Family Medicine, Radiology with the lifestyle of a Southeastern Coastal city and you will be hard pressed to find a better place to do your transitional year training. We look forward to meeting you and learning more about you and your interests.
Sincerely,
Terrence E. Steyer, MD
