John Freedy, MD, PhD
Dr. Freedy started his career at MUSC as a psychologist
in the Department of Psychiatry. After returning to medical
school at MUSC and residency training in our department,
he joined the Family Medicine residency faculty in 2005
as the coordinator of Behavioral Science training for the
residency program. His professional interests include violence
and traumatic stress, impact of mental health upon physical
health, behavioral science curriculum development, and Balint
training.

Peter J. Carek, MD
Dr. Carek received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Clemson
University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from MUSC.
He completed his Family Medicine Residency at MUSC, where
he served as Chief Resident. From 1990-92, Dr. Carek served
as primary care sports fellow at the Ohio Physical Therapy
and Sports Medicine and the University of Tennessee Medical
Center at Knoxville. He also obtained his Master's Degree
in Human Performances and Sports Studies at the University
of Tennessee.
Dr. Carek joined the faculty in 1992 and has been Residency
Program Director since 1995. His main areas of interest
are sports medicine, physical activity and health promotion
in addition to quality improvement.

.Joseph Benich, III,
MD
Dr. Benich was born in Charleston, SC and attended college
at Clemson University. JJ graduated from MUSC and completed
the Trident/MUSC residency program serving as chief resident
in 2008. During residency his research focused on the management
of heart failure in the primary care setting. Clinical and
research interests include cardiovascular disease, preventive
care, and medical education. He joined our faculty as an assistant
professor in July 2008 and will primarily provide clinical
care in our East Cooper University Family Medicine office.
