HOW TO TAKE A TEMPERATURE
What Kind Of Thermometer Should You Use?
There are two types of thermometers available. A rectal thermometer should be used to check the temperature of babies and small children up to four years old. A rectal thermometer has a short round bulb. An oral thermometer should be used with older children and adults. An oral thermometer has a long thin bulb.
How Do You Take A Temperature?
- Shake the thermometer until the mercury line is below 96° F. Do not hold
the thermometer by the bulb end.
To Check A Rectal Temperature
- Use petroleum jelly or KY jelly to coat the bulb of a rectal thermometer.
- Gently insert the thermometer into the rectum no further than one inch.
- Hold the thermometer in place for two to three minutes.
- Hold the child firmly while checking the temperature.
To Check A Temperature By Mouth
- Place the bulb of an oral thermometer under the tongue.
- Keep mouth closed, but do not bite the thermometer.
- Leave in place for two minutes.
How Do You Read A Thermometer?
- Hold the thermometer at eye level. (Do not hold at the bulb end.)
- Turn the thermometer slowly until the line of mercury is seen.
- Read the number on the thermometer where the line of mercury ends.
