MUSCLE, JOINT, AND BONE INJURIES

What Are The Symptoms Of Muscle, Joint, And Bone Injuries?

Pain, tenderness to touch, and swelling are the main symptoms of muscle, joint, and bone injuries. These may start suddenly after an accident or injury or may first be noticed several hours to a day following exercise that you usually do not do.

What Is The Home Treatment For Muscle, Joint, And Bone Injuries?

  1. Elevate the injured part. This is the best way to decrease swelling and pain.
  2. Immediately and for the next few days, use cold compresses or an ice pack for 15 to 30 minutes at a time.
  3. Rest the injured part or it will take longer to heal. You may nee to rent a pair of crutches for a while if you have injured your knee or foot.
  4. Take aspirin or ibuprofen for pain. Tylenol® may also be used but it may not be as effective as aspirin for this type of pain. Take aspirin or ibuprofen with food or try buffered aspirin. (Do not give aspirin products to babies, children, or teenagers unless recommended by your doctor.)

When Should You Call The Doctor?

For mild injuries that do not seem to involve a broken bone, a visit to the doctor is probably not necessary. If a mild injury is not getting better after one week of home treatment, make an appointment to see your doctor. If you have severe pain, call your doctor right away.
