KIDNEY OR BLADDER (URINE) INFECTION
What Is A Urine Infection?
When the urine has bacteria (germs) in it, a person has a urine infection.
How Can You Tell If You Have A Urine Infection?
You may have one or more of the following symptoms:
- feeling of soreness in the lower stomach or back.
- burning during urination.
- need to urinate often but only a little comes out each time.
- pink or red urine.
- fever.
What Do You Do For Urine Infections?
Women get more urine infections than men. If you get frequent urine infections, do the following to help prevent them:
- Keep clean around the vagina. Always wipe from the front to the back after a bowel movement.
- Do not take bubble baths. Bubble baths can irritate the urinary opening and make it easier for germs to enter.
- After sexual intercourse, get up to urinate.
Treatment for Male and Female
If you do get a urinary tract infection, drink a glass full of water every hour until your appointment with the doctor. Continue to drink plenty of water or juice after your appointment.
When
Should You Call The Doctor?
Call the doctor for an appointment whenever you suspect you have a urine infection. If you first have symptoms late at night, it is safe to wait until morning to call unless you have a high fever or feel very ill. The doctor will probably prescribe an antibiotic medicine. Be sure to take the medicine until it is all gone. You should ask the doctor to check another urine sample after you have finished taking the medicine.
