INSECT BITES

Mosquito, ant, gnat, and flea bites are the most common bites in the spring and summer months. Insect bites often itch and if scratched, may become infected. Children are especially likely to get insect bite infections.

How Can Insect Bites Be Prevented?

  1. Use flea collars, sprays, or powders on house pets.
  2. If fleas have gotten into the rug or furniture, have the house sprayed to get rid of them. Treat your pet for fleas at the same time.
  3. Use insect repellent when outdoors. A lotion may be better for young children since a spray may get in their eyes. An Avon bath oil called Skin-So-Soft® has been found to be a good insect repellent but needs to be applied often.
  4. Do not use perfumes: they sometimes attract insects.

What Is The Home Treatment For Insect Bites?

  1. Keep fingernails short so that the scratching will cause less damage to skin and fewer infections.
  2. Keep the skin around bites as clean as possible to prevent infection.
  3. Use calamine lotion to stop itching.
  4. A cool or slightly warm bath is also soothing. Add half a box of corn starch or one cup of Aveeno® (available in drug stores) to the bath water. Baking soda may also be used.
  5. If scabs, pus, or clear fluid are present, there may be an infection and frequent washing with soap and water is important.

When Should You Call The Doctor?

If the skin looks infected as described above, make an appointment to see the doctor.
