Ivar Frithsen
Ivar joined our department as a research fellow in July,
2005. He is married to Emily and has a daughter, Ruby, and
a son, Ben. Ivar grew up in the small coastal community
of Rockport, MA. He went out west for college and graduated
from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He has also
lived in Steamboat Springs, CO for a few years. He went
to medical school at the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann
University where he became interested in both Family Medicine
and Environmental Medicine. During his fellowship his research
focused on Occupational and Environmental Medicine issues.
After graduation in 2007 he joined our faculty as the assistant
director for the Agromedicine Program. Other than
spending time with my family, I enjoy fishing, golf, reading
and music in my spare time.

Marty Player
Marty grew up in Lancaster SC and attended the University
of South Carolina for undergraduate and medical education.
He completed his family medicine residency at Christiana
Care Health Services in Wilmington, Delaware in 2004. He
spent an additional year there as a fellow in faculty development
with a focus on underserved and vulnerable populations.
He wished to continue with formal research training, and
joined the Research Fellowship at MUSC Family Medicine and
the Clinical Research masters program in the college of
graduate studies at MUSC in July 2005. Research interests
include cardiovascular risk factors and detection.
Marty enjoys the beach, running, and eating ice cream. He
lives in West Ashley with his shih tzu Cooper.

Ann Rodden
Ann Rodden, a native of Illinois, attended Louisiana State
University in Baton Rouge. After graduation in 1998 with
a BS in biochemistry, she moved to the Chicago area and
attended Midwestern University – Chicago College of
Osteopathic Medicine. In 2002, Ann moved to Charleston,
SC to do a residency at the Family Medicine Residency Program
at Trident Regional Medical Center. After finishing the
program as Chief Resident in 2005 she joined the Faculty
Development Fellowship at the MUSC Family Medicine Program.
Ann enjoys reading, hiking, spending time with her 3 year
old niece (Jillian), and seeing a good movie from time to
time. Research interests at this time are the effects of
finger nail polish on pulse oximeter readings along with
adolescent weight issues.

Sara Young
Sara graduated from Boston University in 1997 with a BA
in Chemistry: Focus in Biochemistry. She received her medical
degree from Boston University in 2001 before coming to Charleston
for the MUSC/ Trident Family Medicine Residency. She graduated
from the Trident Family Medicine Residency program in 2004,
then enrolled in the MUSC Academic Development Fellowship
and Master’s in Clinical Research Program. In the
Fall of 2006, Sara joins the Medical College of Georgia
in Augusta, Georgia as an Assistant Professor in the Department
of Family Medicine. Her research interests include identifying
potentially modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline
and dementia.

Heather Liszka
Dr. Liszka completed the faculty development/clinical research
fellowship in 2005 and transitioned to a research faculty
position. In a previous life, she graduated from Penn State
University with a degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics.
This was followed by one year doing research in medical
optics at the University of Florence, Italy under a Fulbright
grant. She made a transition from engineering to medicine
and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of
Medicine in 1999. After completing residency at the University
of Rochester Family Practice Residency Program in 2002,
she spent a past year in rural clinics in California, Washington,
and Hawaii. She continues to pursue her passion for research
now at MUSC. Current clinical and research areas of interest
include primary care mental health, women's health and OB,
complementary and alternative medicine, and international
medicine.

Marcia Taylor
Marcia graduated from Francis Marion University in 1996
recieving a B.S. degree in chemistry and biology. She recieved
her medical degree from the University of South Carolina
School of Medicine where she also completed her residency
training. Her research interests include cancer and rheumatology.
She joined the fellowship program in 2003, and upon completion
of her fellowship in 2005, she has joined the faculty at
MUSC. She continues to be involved in the medical education
both of students and residents, as well as pursuing research
interests related to prostate cancer. In 2006 she departed
from MUSC to pursue her career elsewhere.

Brian Wells
Brian Wells, MD, MSCR graduated from the Trident Family Medicine
Residency in 1999. Dr. Wells then enrolled in the Academic Development
Fellowship in the MUSC Family Medicine Department. During this
fellowship Brian won a Distinguished Paper Award at the 2003 North
American Primary Research Group Meeting in Banff, Alberta, Canada
for his paper titled "Transferrin Saturation: The Link with
Low-density Lipoprotein and Mortality". As part of the fellowship,
Dr Wells received a Master's Degree in Clinical Research from
the Medical University of South Carolina. His master's thesis
focused on the interaction of iron and lipids on lipid peroxidation,
a risk factor for heart disease, Alzheimer's Disease, and Cancer.
After graduation in 2004 Brian returned to his home state of Ohio
where he has been hired to be the research director of the Cleveland
Clinic Department of Family Medicine in Strongsville, OH. He hopes
to continue his research on oxidation. In addition, Brian hopes
to continue sailing (at least a few months a year) on Lake Erie.

Vanessa Diaz
Vanessa completed her two-year faculty development fellowship
with us in June 2004 and obtained her Masters of Science
in Clinical Research. She has now joined the Department
of Family Medicine as an active member of the research and
clinical faculty. Previously, she graduated from University
of Miami School of Medicine and completed her residency
in Savannah, GA. A native of Panama, Dr. Diaz is fluent
in Spanish. Her research interests include Latino health
and women's health issues.

Richelle Koopman
Richelle joined us as a two-year faculty development fellow
in 2001 and earned her Masters of Science in Clinical Research
in 2003. Her thesis was titled Undiagnosed Diabetes: Predictors
and Comorbidities, and was funded by the National Institute
of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases. Dr. Koopman
was an Assistant Professor in the MUSC Department of Family
Medicine and a member of the fellowship faculty from 2003
to 2007. She is now with the Department of Family
and Community Medicine at the University of Missouri - Columbia.
Her research interests include risk factors and early
detection of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
