Department
of Family Medicine
Research Fellowship Program |
The Medical University of South Carolina offers a fellowship designed
toward faculty development with emphasis on specific skills and
knowledge in research design and implementation within well defined
areas of primary care research as well as development of teaching
and administrative skills. The Department of Family Medicine has
been in existence for over thirty years and has become an integral
part of research in primary care at MUSC, providing unique opportunities
for research in many diverse areas of health care.
The department fellowship faculty are involved in a wide range
of research topics including health services research, diabetes,
secondary data analysis and continuity of care. Fellows are encouraged
to work in the areas of research already of interest to faculty
at MUSC while in training. Working within each of these areas
are successfully funded and published faculty members who can
provide mentoring, guidance, and expertise throughout the fellowship
experience.
Curriculum
The structure of the fellowship is a two year program with a
defined curriculum in the three basic skills areas of research,
teaching, and administration. Formal instruction will include
participation in the Masters of Clinical
Research program offered through the College
of Graduate Studies at MUSC as well as participation in intensive
training sessions on teaching, administrative and leadership skills
development, and applied research. These sessions will provide
the opportunity for collaboration with community-based faculty
with in the state. Fellows will also develop their clinical teaching
skills by supervising residents in the ambulatory setting and
on hospital rotations. In addition to the formal curriculum, fellows
will participate in ongoing departmental research initiatives
including a monthly secondary data research seminar (a collaboration
among the Departments of Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine
and Pediatrics), a monthly generalist fellows journal club, and
a monthly family medicine journal club. As part of the program,
fellows will receive funding to attend two major family medicine
conferences a year including the annual meetings of both the Society
of Teachers of Family Medicine and the North American Primary
Care Research Group. These meetings will provide socialization
opportunities for fellows along with the opportunity to present
their own research and make academic connections.
