Program Overview The Post-Doctoral program in Periodontics is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. The objective of this program is to develop specialists with a sound academic background on which to base clinical treatment, research and teaching. The clinical component of this program includes:
The didactic component includes treatment planning seminars and literature reviews one half day each per week, as well as formal lecture courses. A research project with manuscript suitable for publication is mandatory. A copy of the bloodborne and infectious disease policies are available to the applicant upon request.The on call schedule comprises one week every six weeks. Emphasis is placed on training clinicians who are competent in all aspects of periodontology, so that they will be eligible for certification by the American Board of Periodontology. Candidates will complete either the M.H.S. Program (College of Health Profession - Master in Health Sciences), or the M.S. Program (College of Graduate Studies - Master of Science). The curriculum is flexible enough to accommodate both those interested in private practice and those interested in academics. The Masters’ programs are completed simultaneously with the clinical Certificate program and there is no option for a Certificate only program. The MHS and Certificate program is 36 months in duration. The Master of Science degree is generally for those applicants with a strong interest in research and the basic sciences and the total time required to complete the combination of Certificate and MS may be more than 36 months depending on the research project and thesis defense. A PhD program is also available for those interested and qualified. New students are expected to begin their program on July 1st, and no provision is made for other than full time participation in the program. Admission Criteria Applicants must have a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree from a dental school in the United States or Canada. In general, applicants are expected to have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Scores from Part I of the National Dental Board Examination are required for application to the program and must be sent to us as part of your application package. Scores from Part II of the National Dental Board Examination must be sent to us as soon as they are available. A minimum score of 1100 on the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) is required for applicants interested in pursuing the Master of Science degree in a basic science. This GRE score must be sent to us as part of your application package. Applications may be submitted at any time before the application deadline of July 1 of the year preceding the anticipated start of your program, eg., July 1, 2007 to begin the program July 1, 2008. Application as early as possible is strongly recommended. We invite qualified applicants for personal interviews and select our future residents as early as August 1, 2007. Please contact Dr. Krayer with any questions. Stipend and Cost of Study The stipend is $10,000 per year. Estimated tuition and other fees for one year vary between $7,000 and $10,000 depending on the year of study. All clinical instruments are provided by the Division of Periodontics, Department of Stomatology with the exception of a clinical camera which must be purchased by the student. |
