Case 7: Cough Part I. HISTORY OF ILLNESS: This is a 42-year-old white female who developed a cough approximately 4 months ago. The patient states that she had an upper respiratory illness characterized by cough, sputum production and shortness of breath. The sputum production and shortness of breath resolved after approximately 1 week. However, the patient was left with a cough. Her review of systems at that time she was sick revealed nasal stuffiness, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. She still complains of occasional heartburn. The other symptoms have since resolved. The patient states that the cough is made worse with exercise, stress and exposure to dust. However, the cough is not made worse when exposed to smoke. She denies chest tightness. The cough is now non-productive. The patient denies fever chills, night sweats, or weight loss.
