Welcome to our website. Our Department of Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Epidemiology (DBBE) is a basic science department in the College of Medicine. The department has more than 30 faculty members with expertise in biostatistics, bioinformatics, and epidemiology, many with joint appointments in other areas of MUSC. In addition, several MUSC faculty members with primary appointments elsewhere have joint appointments in DBBE. The department currently ranks 5th in NIH funding as compared with the 18 similar departments in Colleges of Medicine across the country.
DBBE was founded in 1968 by Clinton Miller, Ph.D. He was followed by David Hoel, Ph.D. in 1993, John Dunbar, M.D. (acting) in 1997 and myself in 1999. The Department has had several name changes before its current name although there has been a program in all three areas for many years, with Systems Science being the precursor of Bioinformatics. The Department offers both Masters and Ph.D. degrees in each of the Divisions (Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and Epidemiology). Since 2000, the Department also offers a Masters of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) for health professionals who have advanced degrees and for pre-doctoral students from across MUSC who participate in the Roadmap T32. DBBE faculty members conduct their own methodological research as well as collaborate with multiple investigators throughout the university. The university collaborations are facilitated by our Collaborative Unit, with support from the Provost of MUSC. Through the Data Coordination Unit (DCU) our faculty also develop data management systems for large longitudinal and often multi-site projects. You will find more information about our education and research activities including our Collaborative Unit and DCU by browsing through our site.
