FACT SHEET FOR VISITING MEDICALSTUDENTS AT THE
MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

APPLICATIONS WILL BE RETURNED IF RECEIVED PRIOR TO APRIL 1ST (no exceptions)

A limited number of clinical electives are available for students from other LCME medical schools who have completed their clinical core curriculum. Visiting students are limited to a maximum of two (2) four-week electives at MUSC. Medical University of South Carolina students have first priority in selecting rotations and consequently we cannot always accommodate visiting students at the time or in the discipline requested. Visiting students are students with current status in an accredited LCME medical school.
1. Complete your part of the student section of the application.

2. Your schools' Dean's Office should complete the last part of the application.

    A. Malpractice Insurance: The malpractice insurance of the Medical University of South Carolina does cover visiting students for up to $300,000/$600,000. The elective application form requires an official signature attesting to malpractice coverage  by the students' home school, or a certificate of insurance.

    B. Medical Expenses: Medical care expenses, incurred by the visiting student while at this institution, will be the student responsibility.

3. Health Statement for Visiting Students must be completed IN FULL by a physician or student health official. If any portions are not completed your application will not be processed and will be returned to you. NO OTHER HEALTH FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

4. In order for your application to be processed you must send, in completion: 1) Visiting Student Application, 2) Health Statement for Visiting Students, 3) official transcript and 4) a check for $50.00 made payable to: MUSC COM. Again, your application will not be processed until all of these items are received. Please be aware that certain specialties require additional information and are noted accordingly under their individual descriptions. DO NOT SEND INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS OR SEND REQUIREMENTS SEPARATELY.  ANY TRANSCRIPTS, HEALTH STATEMENTS, ETC. RECEIVED SEPARATELY FROM AN APPLICATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND THE APPLICATION WILL BE RETURNED UNPROCESSED.

5. The visiting student will be notified by email as to whether or not they have been accepted. Electives are not offered to visiting students until MUSC students have been scheduled on or about June 1st and the process can take up to six weeks from this point. Applications received before June will be held on file and will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. The Medical University of South Carolina requires two (2) months notice on any visiting student application.
DO NOT CALL THE COLLEGE TO SEE IF YOUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED OR PROCESSED. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED BY EMAIL AS SOON AS YOUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN PROCESSED.

6. Visiting Students must work their schedules around the MUSC COM Schedule and not request special dates to fit their school's calendar. NO EXCEPTIONS.

TUITION:
Visiting students are allowed to take a maximum of eight (8) weeks of electives. There is no tuition charge.

EVALUATION REQUESTS:
The visiting students' school should provide evaluation forms. These forms should be sent directly to the department in which a visiting student is completing an elective. Department addresses are available at http://www.musc.edu/locator.html.

HOUSING:
Securing housing is the responsibility of the visiting student. To receive a listing of the short-term rentals in Charleston, call the Housing Office at 843-792-0394. They will be happy to assist you with any questions.

PARKING:
For information about parking facilities call Parking Management at 843-792-3665.

ID BADGE:
To receive a temporary Student ID badge, take your confirmation email to the Department of Human Resources, 105 Harborview Tower.  they will then give you a letter that will need to be taken to the Public Safety Department at 101 Doughty St. to receive your badge.   This will enable you to use the library and the Student Harper Center (for a small fee), etc.

COMPUTER ACCESS:
While you will be given access to the library and its computers, you will not be given direct access to patient files.  You must shadow your resident or attending in order to view patient information and charts.

PAGERS:
Visiting students will be issued pagers by the department if they want the student to have one.  The COM does not issue pagers to any students.

Finally, a word of caution. All schools look with considerable disdain on those students who, after reserving a clerkship, fail to show up or give notification of a change in plans. If you must cancel a reservation, please notify the department involved and the Dean's Office - College of Medicine. We would appreciate two months notice of changes or cancellation. This will provide a chance for other visiting students to participate or enable the department to readjust its teaching program accordingly.

I hope that your visit to the Medical University of South Carolina is enjoyable and rewarding.
