Description

The student will attend outpatient developmental clinics and perform supervised developmental assessments/evaluations for the spectrum of developmental and behavioral problems (ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, developmental delay, spina bifida, and neonatal high risk infant follow-up).

  • Learn the basics of developmental assessment of ages 0-3, preschool and school age children

 Title:  Human Milk and Lactation

Description

Physiology of lactation will be discussed in the context of mother/infant dyad, maternal and infant health condition. The mechanics of breastfeeding will be understood through didactic and bedside teaching and interaction with Dr. Wagner during rounds and with MUSC's lactation consultants. The structure and bioactive/protective effect of human milk will be discussed in terms of epidemiological studies. Lastly, the students will spend one afternoon in the lab processing a milk sample, staining the cells and looking at the human milk under the microscope.

 Title:  Pediatric Pulmonary

Description

The student will accompany the pulmonary attending on all teaching and clinical activities except night and weekend call. They will attend 3 clinics a week and see all inpatients who the pulmonary team is following (both primary patients and consults). The range of illnesses includes all types of children's lung diseases including cystic fibrosis, asthma, apnea, respiratory failure, obstructive sleep apnea, BPD, pneumonia, chronic cough, airway and lung anomalies, bronchiolitis, chronic aspiration, interstitial lung disease and lung infections in immunocompromised patients. Learning will be accomplished via independent study, directed reading, patient encounters and discussions.

Course objectives

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of respiratory illnesses in children and perform an appropriate physical examination.
  • Understand the appropriate diagnostic evaluation of children with respiratory problems, particularly pulmonary function testing and radiology.
  • Understand the various therapies used for common pulmonary problems in children, particularly asthma and CF.
  • Discuss a particular topic for which the student has done independent study in the literature.

DescriptionThe extern will be  exposed to pediatric patients with acute and chronic diseases and  will participate in the complete care of the patient as part of the general pediatric team where they will learn to communicate with patients, families, staff and referring physicians. Clinical emphasis will include enhancement of interviewing and physical examination skills, discussions of pathophysiology, formulation of diagnostic and treatment plans and performance of commonly used procedures under the supervision of senior residents and attendings.
