Description

This course is an introduction to the evaluation and management of diseases of the head and neck. Students attend a clinically oriented lecture series, participate in the outpatient clinics and have closely supervised inpatient responsibility.

Description

Intensive clinical experience in otolaryngology head and neck surgery. The student is given direct responsibility for inpatient care and is expected to participate in the operating room (under the personalized instruction of the attending staff).

  • Become acquainted with the whole spectrum of ENT surgery and medical management
  • Able to manage the post-operative inpatient

Description

This elective gives the student an opportunity to pursue a clinical and basic research project for publication. Student must meet with faculty and have project approved prior to registering for this elective.

  • Learn how to setup and complete a chart review project 
  • Learn how to setup a basic or clinical science project 
  • Learn how to write a scientific paper 
Instructional Methodology

The student will spend approximately (40) hours per week in the laboratory. Grade will be determined upon completion of their project and the effort put forth.

Description

This course is an introduction to the evaluation and management of tumors of the head and neck. Students will function as an acting extern and will be responsible for learning the outpatient and inpatient care of patients with tumors of the head and neck. The student will be comfortable with the full head and neck exam, diagnostic evaluation, and perioperative management of head and neck tumor patients.

  • Understand and manage the diagnosis of head and neck tumors
  • Review the treatment, inpatient, outpatient, and perioperative care of head and neck tumor patients

Description

This course is an introduction to head and neck oncology research. Projects include basic science bench research, translational research, and clinical research. Ongoing research in the head and neck tumor program includes immunotherapy, molecular diagnostics, gene therapy, cancer prevention and control, and speech/swallowing or dental/masticatory outcomes. The student will choose one project to pursue and will develop research methods, analyze results, and present following completion of the rotation. The student will be mentored by a clinician and basic scientist throughout the month.

Course Objectives

  • Become proficient in the pathogenesis of head and neck cancer 
  • Develop a research protocol and learn laboratory techniques 
  • Complete a research project in head and neck cancer resulting in a poster or oral presentation of the conclusions
