Title: Coronary Care Unit / Cardiology

Description:

This rotation provides an opportunity to enhance clinical and procedural skills in a cardiac intensive care environment. The student will elicit history and physical examinations, correlate findings with laboratory and diagnostic data, and assist the resident with daily care and management of critically ill patients. Daily notes and rounds with the attending, fellow, and resident physicians is expected. EKG interpretation will be mastered.

Course Objectives:

  • Become familiar with admission criteria for the Coronary Care Unit.
  • Develop skills in the management of acute cardiac illnesses, including myocardial infarction, arrhythmia's, and congestive heart failure.
  • Better understand hemodynamic monitoring and management of critically ill patients, including the use of pacemakers, AICDs, IABPs, and VADs.
  • Perform under direct supervision, procedures, including placement of arterial lines, central venous catheters, and Swan Ganz catheters.

Title: Digestive Disease

Description:

The course is an introduction to management of complex digestive diseases and the clinical research and evaluation techniques used to improve it. This student will be exposed to different aspects of digestive disease, including luminal gastroenterology, pancreatic and biliary diseases, hepatology, motility disorders, nutrition and cancer. There will be emphasis on new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (including Radiology, Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Advanced Endoscopy). Students will participate in all of the academic activities of the Digestive Disease Center including the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine. Involvement in ongoing research projects is encouraged, to improve knowledge of research techniques and informatics tools. There is no call. 

Course Objectives:

Obtain an overview of modern management of a variety of digestive diseases in a tertiary referral environment, utilizing state of the art techniques, and methods of evaluation. 

Instructional Methodology:

Attendance at numerous daily conferences within the Digestive Disease Center, clinics and procedures. Under the direction of the primary instructor, students will be allocated one or more other faculty mentors for specific research and training opportunities, as appropriate. Evaluations will be based on feedback from the relevant faculty at the conclusion of the elective. Description

This elective provides a broad and integrated exposure to the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and state-of-the-art management of patients with a variety of solid-organ tumors, hematologic malignancies, and other hematologic disorders including anemias and hereditary and acquired bleeding and clotting disorders. This is accomplished by assignment to the Consultation Service, participation in rounds on the inpatient Oncology-Hematology Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, attendance at the outpatient clinics, and formal training with the instructor in the interpretation of peripheral blood smears and bone marrow aspirates. 

Course Objectives

Clinical presentation, diagnosis, and state-of-the-art management of patients with a variety of cancers, hematologic malignancies and other hematologic disorders including anemias, hereditary an acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders. Instructional Methodology

  • Participation in formal conferences of the Hematology/Oncology Division, including the Friday Seminar Series, Chief-of-Service rounds, Consultation Service conference, tumor boards and Journal Club.

Title: Infectious Diseases Consultation

Description

This elective consists of consultation rounds with the infectious disease attending, fellow and medical resident at MUH providing extensive exposure to the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases precipitating hospital admission or occurring during hospitalization for non-infectious problems. The student will work up inpatients for presentation to the infectious diseases attending. The progress of inpatients will be monitored closely. Clinical experience is supplemented and extended by case conferences, Journal Club and a didactic lecture series. The didactic series is an 8 lecture series repeated each month by all faculty and fellows and provides an introduction to the practice of infectious diseases.

HIV infection is not a part of this course. Please discuss with course director for possible opportunities to be involved in HIV care.

This course provides student participation in the activities of the division: inpatient consultations, several outpatient clinics (Endocrinology, Diabetes Mellitus, Thyroid – private consultations), investigation of patients with endocrine/metabolic problems, weekly case conferences, noon house staff conferences, weekly conferences with the division (a topic oriented conference) and Journal Club. Direct contact with attendings is employed in all clinical settings.

The student assumes the role of a PGY-l house officer. The student is expected to discharge the responsibilities appropriate for that position, including performance of the history and physical examination, providing clinical care and documentation of patients. The student works closely with a supervising medicine resident and attending physician. The student participates in the scheduled conferences offered by the Department of Medicine.

This elective emphasizes the evaluation and management of outpatients with common musculoskeletal diseases.  The majority of the time is spent in private and public ambulatory clinics of the division.  Limited exposure to complicated inpatient consultations is available.  Students will have intense one-on-one contact with faculty in the evaluation of ambulatory patients.

Description

The 4 week course is 2 weeks on the hospitalist consult service at MUSC and 2 weeks on the community hospitalist service at East Cooper Hospital in Mount Pleasant. The 2 week course is either.

At both sites, the student is expected to independently evaluate patients, follow them daily, and present findings/plan to the hospitalist attending. The consult team at MUSC consists of an attending hospitalist and a medical resident. At East Cooper, the student works solely with an attending hospitalist.

Course objectives

Learn risk assessment and risk reduction strategies in patients with medical problems undergoing surgery

  • Demonstrate fundamentals of perioperative cardiovascular, pulmonary, and diabetes management
  • Demonstrate basics of perioperative venous thromboemolism prophylaxis, anticoagulation management, and antibiotic prophylaxis management
  • Understanding how a community hospitalist program differs from an academic hospitalist program
