 Title: Community Emergency Medicine

Description

Community-based emergency medicine with broad based skills, exposure to acute care and trauma.

Course objectives

  • Recognize and treat life threatening emergencies
  • Manage airways
  • Interpret EKG CXR, ABG
  • Wound management for sports medicine
Instructional methodology (approximate # of hours per week)
  • Lectures - 3
  • Rounds and Discussions - 4
  • Patient Contact - 20-30/shift

  • Call - 3-4 12/hr shifts per week

Title: Emergency Medicine Externship

Course Director: Jeff Bush, M.D.

 Location: Charleston, SC

 Number of students: 4 maximum

We request that only students interested in Emergency Medicine as a career apply to this rotation.

Only 2 visiting students per month

NOTE:  All VISITING STUDENTS must submit the following with their other application materials:  CV, 2 letters of recommendation and a copy of your USMLE STEP 1 score. A letter from your school attesting to your Step 1 score may be substituted.

Duration: 4 weeks

Visitors: July to January only

Description

The course consists of 8-hour shifts in the Emergency Department. Approximately 15 shifts will be offered. During each shift, the student will interact with patients and learn how to perform an expeditious and focused history and physical. The student will focus on how to order appropriate diagnostic tests and formulate a differential diagnosis. The student will work closely with the attending on duty and learn how to treat and manage many various illnesses and injuries. The student will also have opportunities to learn procedural skills, such as laceration repair, incision and drainage of abscesses, obtaining intravenous access and others.

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Assess Emergency Department patients with various complaints
  • Initiate stabilization of critically ill and injured patients
  • Order appropriate diagnostic tests and interpret the results
  • Perform basic procedures as described above

  • Lectures - 4
  • Rounds and Discussions - daily
  • Patient Contact - 8 hrs/shift
  • Patient Load - 2-4
  • Call - None
  • A Test is given at end of rotation and is incorporated into final grade
