LEARNING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this clinical rotation, students will be able
to:
1. Understand and assist in the diagnosis and treatment
of common genitourinary conditions (e.g. nephrolithiasis, bladder,
kidney, prostate malignancy, voiding dysfunction, female incontinence
and prolapse, erectile dysfunction)
2. Understand and assist in implementing the pre-operative evaluation
and post-operative care of genitourinary surgical patients.
3. Comprehend the outpatient management of common genitourinary
conditions.
4. Recognize the indications for placement of, and removal of, urological
catheters, drains, and tubes.
TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND
ROTATION ACTIVITIES:
Students on this rotation will be expected to learn and achieve
the educational goals and objectives through the following methodologies
and activities:
1. Observation and participation in the urology
operative theatre.
2. Participation in morning and evening inpatient surgical rounds.
3. Observation and assistance with outpatient urological procedures
(e.g. urodynamics, cystoscopy, vasectomy, prostate biopsy).
4. Attendance and participation in Urology conferences.
PATIENT ENCOUNTERS
Students on this rotation will be expected to work up and/or follow
the following minimum number of patients with the specified conditions
(i.e, 2 pediatric ear infections, 2 adult migraine headaches):
1. 1 Prostate cancer
2. 1 Voiding dysfunction/incontinence
3. 1 Nephrolithiasis
4. 1 Bladder cancer
5. 1 Renal cancer
EVALUATION AND FEEDBACK:
Students on this rotation will be evaluated through the following
methods, and designate by whom for each method:
1. Direct observation of clinical and patient care
skills by the chief resident.
2. Direct observation of clinical and patient care skills by the
attending urologist.

Learners will receive feedback on their clinical performance verbally
following rounds and participation in surgeries.
