Practicing medicine as a Physician Assistant with the supervision of a licensed physician is an exciting and rewarding career. The healthcare system has embraced the PA profession, and PAs are providing health care in a multitude of settings and increasing access to care for many patients. Physician Assistants are working in family medicine, internal medicine, women’s health, emergency medicine, and many other specialties in medicine. Mission The mission of the Physician Assistant Program at the Medical University of South Carolina is to prepare compassionate, diverse graduates to collaborate with physicians to provide high quality health care to all patients. The program uses the most current medical and information technology to provide innovative education with an emphasis in primary care and evidence-based medicine. The program faculty are dedicated to engaging in scholarly activities which promote the program, college, university, and profession. Programs Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies – Entry Level Program The Physician Assistant Program offers an entry level Master of Science Degree in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPAS) for individuals wanting to learn the skills, knowledge and ability to enter the PA profession. The PA Program also offers a transitional degree program for the bachelor degree prepared practicing Physician Assistant. Physician Assistant Academic Fellowship The transition from clinician to academician requires a major role transition, one which the primary role shifts from doing practice to one that involves influencing practice through the preparation of future generations of practitioners. One innovative approach to preparing academicians is through a structured academic fellowship experience. Continuing Medical Education Programs The Physician Assistant Program offers continuing medical education opportunities each year for practicing physician assistants through various venues, including on-site conferences and symposia as well as web-based instruction. Programs are generally accredited for Category I CME through the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
