The College of Health Professions is pleased to announce a noteworthy award received by Dr. James Krause, first author and Dr. Sandy Brotherton, Dr. Dave Morrisette, Dr. Susan Newman and Dr. Tasos Karakostas, co-authors on a paper that was awarded the National Association of Rehabilitation Research and Training Centers (NARRTC) first annual "Best Paper Award". They were in competition with all other NIDRR funded research that was published last year in a peer-reviewed journal (30 manuscripts were evaluated for the award). The title of the paper was “Does pain interference mediate the relationship of independence in ambulation with depressive symptoms after spinal cord injury?” and it was published in the journal “Rehabilitation Psychology” in 2007. Congratulations to all and special thanks to Dr. James Krause for his support and mentorship of faculty. |

 | Dr. Lisa Saladin was selected as the 2008 recipient of the Dorothy E. Baethke-Eleanor J. Carlin Award for the Excellence in Academic Teaching by the American Physical Therapy Association. This award was established in 1981 to recognize excellence in academic teaching in physical therapy. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge an individual who has made significant contributions to physical therapy education through excellence in academic teaching and who demonstrate excellence as a role model for academic teaching for students, faculty and clinicians. Dr. Saladin is Interim Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at the College of Health Professions.

| Dr. Charles Ellis, Assistant Professor of Communication and Sciences Disorders at CHP has been selected as one of the University of Florida's College of Public Health and Health Professions Outstanding Young Alumnus for 2008. Although Charles is too humble to admit it, this a phenomenal accomplishment from a very prestigious university. Dr. Ellis was also a recent recipient of the MUSC Foundation Developing Teacher award. We are very proud to have Dr. Ellis on our faculty.

Doug Leslie (CHEPS) and Charles Ellis (CSD) are the recipients of recent awards. Both of Doug’s awards are funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs. One is for his study, “Mechanisms of Action and Outcome in Peer Support Groups.” The other is for his protocol, “A Pilot Study of Clinical and Demographic Factors Among Women Veterans of OEF/OIF. “ Charles received an award through the MUSC Center for Health Disparities Research for his investigation entitled, “ Racial/Ethnic Differences in Treatment Seeking Behaviors for Stroke-Related Care.” |
