The College of Health Professions held its annual fall retreat on Friday, September 22, 2006 in the atrium of the CHP complex. Faculty and staff came together to share an afternoon dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of the past year and planning for the future, guided by the theme, “sharpening our focus.” Prior to engaging in a series of exercises designed to help the college focus on a collective value proposition, Interim Dean Becki Trickey, Ph.D., presented awards honoring faculty and staff chosen by their peers for their outstanding contributions during the previous year. Honored at this year’s retreat were: Kathleen Cegles, DEd., Excellence in Service, David Morrisette, Ph.D., Developing Scholar of the Year; Esther Forti, Ph.D., Scholar of the Year, and Kim Haley, Staff Person of the Year. Facilitator Kathy Church engaged the college in group activities with the goal of expanding each individual’s concept of what the college does and what the college’s value is to its constituents. Small groups toured several presentation stations located throughout the atrium in order to gain a better understanding of what different components of the college do. Each group then discussed what they perceived as common themes among the various departments and programs, and formulated summary statements capturing these themes. Small, table-sized groups morphed into larger groups as participants worked to compose universal statements and themes about the college’s mission and its value. As the retreat concluded, the college had made great progress in sharpening the focus on a common value proposition. A committee was formed to take the value propositions formed during the retreat and further hone them into one unifying proposition for the college to review, revise, and ultimately adopt, leading to a greater sense of cohesiveness among programs and a stronger identity for the college as a whole. |
