The mission of the undergraduate health sciences program is to prepare health professionals to meet the operational challenges facing the health care industry. We offer a contemporary curriculum taught by seasoned health educators and administrators through a historical institution renowned for academic excellence in the area of health care education, leading to a bachelor of health science (BHS) degree. Prospective students of the BHS program must be working in healthcare to be eligible for the program. It is designed for those who have completed an associate's degree or certificate in an allied health field and are currently working in their field.
Professionals working in the following fields may qualify for the program: - Dental hygienists and assistants
- Emergency medical personnel
- Histotechnologists
- Medical assistants
- Medical laboratory technicians
- Health information managers
- Nurses (associate degree or certificate)
- Radiographers
- Respiratory care practitioners
- Physical therapy and occupational therapy assistants
All BHS courses are online and include mandatory requirements for communicating and/or submission of assignments and assessments. - The majority of the BHS Internet courses require an introductory weekend session each semester in Charleston. These sessions provide a chance to interact with fellow students and faculty and establish expectations and a foundation for the courses.
- It is expected that for every three semester hour course, students will spend an average of five to eight hours per week engaged in reading, studying, communicating, and completing assignments and assessments.
- Students who enroll in BHS program must have access (at home, at work, or through some other source) to a computer and Internet service provider and Office 2000 or higher.
- Students must also have a basic level of computer skills and knowledge of computer operation. In addition, students should have a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and Internet web-browsing.
