Academic Generalist Fellowship Program
To Prepare Physicians for Careers in either
Academic General Pediatrics
or
Academic General Internal Medicine
Divisions of General Pediatrics and General Internal Medicine
The Medical University of South Carolina is pleased to announce its two-year Academic General Fellowship Program designed to prepare physicians for productive academic careers in either General Internal Medicine or General Pediatrics. Fellowship training positions for academic and health care research career tracts for either General Pediatrics or General Internal Medicine are available for Year 2007. It is intended for physicians who have completed either internal medicine or pediatric residencies. This two year program is implemented through the Center for Health Care Research and coordinated with the MUSC Department of Biometry and Epidemiology. Each fellow earns a Master of Science in Clinical Research.
Mission
The mission of the MUSC General Pediatrics and General Internal Medicine Fellowship program is to prepare generalist physicians for academic careers as physician educators and physician investigators in either general pediatrics or general internal medicine. The fellowship program will train generalist physicians to:
- Provide care to diverse groups of patients including minority, poor and other underserved patients
- Design innovative medical curricula and other educational programs
- Conduct research in health services and medical education
- Serve as role models and mentors
Program Goals
The Fellowship Program will increase the number and skills of academic general pediatricians and general internists and increase the diversity of the academic general pediatrics and academic general internal medicine work force. The purpose of the fellowship is to prepare pediatricians and internists for successful careers in academic medicine by developing core competencies based on successful adult education strategies and life long learning. Clinical work will be within the specialty of the fellow and classes, seminars, journal club, research training and other common elements will be shared.
Program Structure
All fellows are involved in four learning activities - research, professional development, primary care, and teaching. Fellows will be enrolled in the Master of Science in Clinical Research and have weekly seminars based on the following core components:
- Medical Education: emphasizes the principles of adult education through a combination of didactic sessions, teaching opportunities and observed and evaluated teaching. Fellows are introduced to innovative strategies and technologies for teaching and evaluation. Technologies include distance learning, standardized teaching and computer based teaching.
- Research: designed around the Masters Program in Clinical Research. Course work will be supplemented with specific presentations of research methods, critical evaluation of the literature and research opportunities of faculty involved in the program. Fellows will do an individual research project under the guidance of an advisory committee. They will also be involved in grant writing though obtaining funding is not a prerequisite for the research project. Fellows also participate in and are an integral part of a journal club designed to guide them in critical reading of the literature.
- Professional Development: will concentrate on the culture of academia and the skills necessary to thrive. These skills will be taught as a series of lectures and projects. They will include an organizational diagnosis of the fellows department or division. Included will be the state of the art in managed care and community-based partnerships.
Candidates
To be eligible for this fellowship program, an individual must be board eligible or board certified in either pediatrics or internal medicine and plan a career as an academic faculty member in either General Internal Medicine or General Pediatrics. Additionally, each trainee must be a citizen of the United States or have a visa permitting permanent residence in the U.S. Members of minority groups that are underrepresented in the physician census are particularly encouraged to apply. An underlying assumption of the fellowship program is that the entering fellows are clinically competent in their specialty. Clinical time will be limited to no more than 30% of the total with most of that involving teaching or precepting medical students, residents or other professions in clinical settings.
