Setting up E-mail in Mozilla, Firefox, or Thunderbird


Overview of settings:
Incoming server: imaps.musc.edu (port 993)
Outgoing server: smtps.musc.edu (port 587 for TLS; port 465 for SSL SMTP, if using Outlook)
MUSC Address book: ldap.musc.edu (host name); type o=MUSC,c=US (Base DN)
SSL connection: always use SSL (secure connections) and check the boxes that ask, in order for your mail to send, receive and locate addresses.
  1. Open Mozilla. Hit Ctrl-2 to open the "Mail & Newsgroups" window (or go to the "Windows" pull-down menu on the top tool bar and select "Mail & Newsgroups").
    - In FireFox, click the "Tools" menu from the tool bar, then "Read Mail" to bring up the Account Wizard.
    - In Thunderbird
  2. From within the Mail and Newsgroups window, go to the "Edit" menu on the top tool bar and select "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings."
  3. From here you can use the "Account Wizard" to set up your e-mail preferences. Click on the option at the bottom of the Window that says "Add Account;" when asked, specify "Email Account."
  4. In the "Your Name" field, enter your first name and last name.
  5. For "Email Address" type in your email alias username followed by @musc.edu (Ex: smithja@musc.edu)
  6. Next - Server type: IMAP
    Incoming server: imaps.musc.edu
    Outgoing Server: smtps.musc.edu
  7. Next - User name: enter your NetID login (Ex: smj7)
  8. Next - Account name: you can type anything here; this is for your recognition. You can use your name, email address, etc.
  9. The next screen you'll see is a review of all the settings you entered. If you see an error, you can click "< Back" at the bottom of the window to return to the previous page and edit the information you entered.
  10. Click "OK" to exit the setup screen and return to the Mail window. Check the box that says "Use SSL connection." Make sure the server field reads "imaps.musc.edu"
  11. Next, click on the item that says "Outgoing server" - make sure the server name reads "smtps.musc.edu", the port value is 587 (you may have to change this), and that the "Use SSL connection" button is selected.
  12. Highlight "Server Settings" in the left window and make sure that "Use Secure SSL Connection" is checked.
  13. To set up your address book to look for MUSC addresses, select "Composition and Addressing." In the "Addressing" section add a new directory pointing to ldap.musc.edu as the host. Make sure that Base DN field reads: o=MUSC,c=US. Leave the port number as it is.
  14. Other preferences:
    Other preferences, such as message text wrapping, send format, viewing options, etc. can also be set if you need to change the default. Go to the Edit menu (from the top toolbar) and click "Preferences." Then select the options you wish to change.
  15. You will log into your email account with you NetID login (Ex: smj7) and password.
