Research Studies

Adolescents without alcohol use problems Adolescents between the ages of 12-20, who are not being treated for an alcohol use disorder and are without alcohol use problems, are needed to participate in a research study as healthy controls to measure potential markers for alcohol dependence. Participation includes one visit at the Institute of Psychiatry. Call 876-5070.

Adult females with stress urinary incontinence The Department of Urology is participating in a research trial comparing two urethral bulking agents for minimally invasive treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). If you are eligible for this study all patient treatments are paid for and some patient compensation is available. Call 792-8924.

Alcohol Do you often drink more than four drinks in one night? MUSC’s Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs is conducting research studies with alcohol drinkers 21 to 65 years old. These studies do not provide alcohol treatment. Call 792-9955.

Anxiety Disorders Program Individuals, ages 18 and older, with symptoms of tension and worry are needed for medication treatment studies. Call 740-1592 ext. 23.

Breastfeeding mothers Mothers 18 to 45 years old and their healthy infants, who are breastfeeding and are within one month of post-delivery, are needed for a study to examine the effects of vitamin D supplementation during breast feeding. Call 792-7842.

Cancer survivors Are you a cancer survivor who wants to become more physically active? Hollings Cancer Center is seeking volunteers for a study evaluating the benefits of two physical activity programs for cancer survivors. Participants will complete an aerobic fitness evaluation before and after an eight-week physical activity program. Call 792-8250.

Depression Do you think you are depressed? Are you currently off medication and between18-65 years old? You may be eligible for a confidential brain imaging research study at MUSC which also includes genetic testing and brain electrical activity recording. Compensation. Diabetes Do you have uncontrolled diabetes? If you are diagnosed with diabetes, only taking Metformin/Glucophage for your diabetes, between the ages of 35-70, and not previously treated with insulin, you may be eligible to participate in a research study. Call Mary at 792-6143 or e-mail fraziemm@musc.edu. 

Females If you are female, at least 18 years old, currently use cocaine, and in good health, you may be eligible to participate in a non-treatment study to investigate impulsivity. Participants receive a psychiatric evaluation at no cost. Call 792-4847.

Female sufferers of stress urinary incontinence Women, 18 years of age and older, who have had symptoms of stress urinary incontinence for at least 12 months are needed. To be eligible, you must: leak urine when you laugh, cough, sneeze or are involved in physical activity, have undergone some form of nonsurgical treatment (e.g., pelvic floor exercises, electro-stimulation) with unsatisfactory results, and available for follow-up for at least 12 months. Food craving Do you have food cravings? If you are between the ages of 21-70 and have no family history of seizures you may be eligible to participate in a minimally invasive brain stimulation study. Compensation. Call 792-3127 or e-mail frohman@musc.edu.

Healthy adults Researchers are evaluating an investigational treatment for pain that involves the use of magnetic pulses (transcranial magnetic stimulation) to stimulate areas of the brain that are thought to be involved in pain perception. Qualifications include no history of seizures or chronic pain condition. Call 792-3127.

Hearing loss Adults with normal hearing or hearing loss needed for hearing research study in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Study participants must be age 18 years and older. African-Americans are strongly encouraged to participate. Compensation. For a screening appointment call 792-7977.

Overweight men or women with type 2 diabetes The Weight Management Center is conducting a one year research study of an investigational medication that may help you lose weight. To qualify, you must be 18 to 65 years of age, overweight, take medication for type 2 diabetes, and meet other criteria. Weight management counseling is included. Call 792-5577 or e-mail WMC@musc.edu with Study D in subject line.

Pain pill or prescription opiate users need The Institute of Psychiatry is recruiting individuals who use pain pills or prescription opiates (such as OxyContin, Vicodin, Lortab or Percocet) to participate in a non-treatment study examining the relationship between stress and drug use. Compensation. Information is kept confidential. Call 792-0236.

Pregnancy Are you less than three months pregnant? If so, you may be eligible to participate in an important research study monitoring fetal growth being conducted through the MUSC OB/GYN department and the East Cooper Women’s Center. Compensation. Call 792-0349 or 876-1434.

Social anxiety study Do you fear and avoid social situations? Do you experience anxiety when meeting new people?  If so, you may have Social Anxiety Disorder. Individuals 18-65 years old who suffer from social anxiety disorder are needed for a research study. If you or someone you know has social anxiety and uses alcohol to cope with these situations, you may qualify. Call MUSC Institute of Psychiatry at 792-5550 and ask for the study coordinator.

Stage IV colon/rectal cancer People with Stage IV colon/rectal cancer are needed to participate in a study to share their stories about their experiences living with the disease. Participants will be asked to complete a one-time 30-minute telephone interview to share their experiences. Call Kristin at 792-7047. Ask about the “Coping with Colorectal Cancer” study.

Treatment for adolescents/young adults with alcohol use problems A behavioral therapy/medication treatment study is being conducted at the Institute of Psychiatry for adolescents/young adults between the ages of 15 - 25 with alcohol use problems. Participants will receive therapy and medication at no cost. Call 876-5070.

Women If you are a female, at least 21 years old, and drink alcohol, you may be eligible for a research study being conducted by the MUSC Department of Psychiatry. Participation is completed in one visit. Compensation. Call 792-7075.
