30 A horse show will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Rein and Shine Therapeutic Riding Center, 5220 Bedaw Farm Drive, Awendaw. The show will be an integrated program, showcasing both students with and without disabilities.  Rein and Shine is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) affiliate center and registered non-profit organization founded in 2001. The organization is dedicated to creating and sustaining a therapeutic horseback riding facility where Charleston area residents with disabilities of all kinds can learn, grow and heal. It provides experienced and professional instruction to members of the community with a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional disabilities including but not limited to Autism Spectrum Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, and Down ’s Syndrome. A potluck lunch will follow the horse show.  No cost to attend/donations welcome.

Psychopharmacology challenges focus of conference

The 2009 Update in Psychiatry, held May 29-30 in the Institute of Psychiatry auditorium, will focus on the daily challenges of applying psychopharma-cology in clinical care.

This conference brings psychiatrists, primary care physicians, psychologists, and other mental health professionals together for networking and education. At the end of this program, participants will be able to: cite practical knowledge regarding new applications of psychotropic compounds; understand Federal Drug Administration warnings for psychopharmacological agents; understand the shared biology of affective-spectrum disorders; appreciate how anti-depressants normalize immune functions; develop practical knowledge regarding potential medical complications resulting from the use of commonly prescribed psychotropic compounds; apply practical approaches to the management of these complications; and much more.

The registration fee ($225 before May 10; $275 afterward) includes conference materials, continuing education credit processing, and continental breakfast. Therapists needed at summer camp
Those interested in rehabilitation science and who want to be part of an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment will be presented with an opportunity this summer.
 
Participants will work at a local summer program for children with severe and multiple diabilities, assist with a health-related quality of life research study and make a difference in the life of a child, the child’s family and the community.
 
This program offers specialized therapy services integrated with an educational program for children up to 12 years old with severe disabilities in the Lowcountry.
 
Physical and occupational therapists are especially needed June 29 - July 31, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday to assist with the camp’s needs.  Salary will be based upon experience.
