| Interns
complete research experience
MUSC’s Department of Medicine sponsors the 10-month Dietetic Internship, an experienced-based program, to prepare baccalaureate-trained students for practice as registered dietitians. With an increasing need for dietetic interns to have experience in clinical research, MUSC is fortunate to have several research projects with a nutrition component. The training of each intern includes a week’s rotation in the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC). This internship experience, designed by preceptor Mary Joan Mitchell, includes participation in a sodium balance study. During the study, each intern follows a diet with a controlled amount of sodium, collects and measures the volume and amount of sodium in their urine. The interns write and present a report of the study and their findings. To participate in MUSC’s Dietetic Internship, students must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an American Dietetic Association approved program.
