Areas of Research Emphasis The cardiovascular research training effort during earlier years focused primarily on cardiac hypertrophy, blood pressure control and associated vascular biology. These areas continue to be main avenues of investigation. A significant additional component has been the participation of faculty in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy who bring substantial expertise and excitement in the area of cardiovascular developmental biology with the goal of applying fundamental discoveries toward translational strategies to prevent, repair or replace diseased cardiovascular tissues. Interrelated areas include embryonic mechanisms of heart and vascular development, developmental basis of adult cardiovascular diseases, and application of developmental biological principles to stem cell based, cardiovascular regenerative medicine.
