Another web search was done, this time with:
“Salar de Atacama”

(Using a plus sign limits the search to articles having ALL of the key words and phrases.)

The result was information on major new growth in the mining of Lithium.

At one time a mineral with limited demand, Lithium has become very important for use in high tech batteries and other new applications. As a results hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on developing the worlds richest source, the brine beneath the (you guessed it) Salar de Atacam. After being pumped out of deep wells the brine is dried in huge evaporation beds on the surface of the Salar.
