The reasons for picking a particular image can be as individual as the background, taste and interests of the student. The more the student is involved in the process the more likely they are to complete a thorough and exciting investigation.
Some reason for picking images are:
Cultural - historical. Places that the students have read about or seen in a movie where the interest is not based solely on what is seen in the image itself.
Geology - Areas of dramatic or changing geology such as great mountains, volcanoes and fault lines make interesting subjects.
Environmental - Areas undergoing rapid changes in their natural environment such as the rapid destruction of rain forests are important and educational sites.
Aesthetic - An image may also be chosen because of its sheer beauty.
